I received a phone call at 0700. No work today-no flower deliveries today due to idiots that can't drive on wet/icy? roads. Then got a phone call from daughter, who works for an health insurance company, no work today for her either. Then another call from her-had an accident. She is talking, sounded rattled. What next? Here on the farm all I have is freezing rain. :evil: Rotten meteorologists predicted 8-12 inches of snow. If I had done my nursing as bad as them, I would be rotting in jail.
Rant off! Ahhh, all better now :). Ain't catharsis good? :shock: :)

Anymore the iggits who "predict" the weather seem to scream gloom & doom so much that it panics everybody. Yes, it's winter. Yes, some places will get snow, some ice, some rain & some sunshine. It's called weather.
What gets me is they have become so scared of their own shadow to the point of stupidity. Locally, they have forecast some snow & ice to BEGIN late in the day on monday. Yet, before noon on Sunday, state trucks were out spraying salt brine on the roads. Plus, schools got cancelled for monday by Sunday evening. Even the talking heads said nothing would start before 3 pm. Lets see, school USUALLY doesn't end until 3 pm. So,,,,,,, if they wanted to prevent the loss of a day of school, go until say 2 pm & then let it out. But to cancel the whole day is stupid. I can recall being at school, having snowball fights BEFORE they cancelled school. We also had drivers who could handle the buses on our roads.
Sheesh!

Now, I know that in many places, it's easier to be correct in predicting the weather due to current conditions. But for them to scream gloom & doom so badly to where everybody goes in a panic way too early is just plain stupid.
 
Yesterday at a high of minus 4 I got vehicles and ATv's running. Plowed and shoveld,etc.. This am the van won't start, it's minus 15. just in from putting a trouble light under the hood. Am adding another soon as I find it and thaw myself a bit. In a while I'll try to start or give it a bit on a charger. Fingers crossed.

Keep in mind that weather ppl play the odds, just like the guys that do blackjack. Nice thing about NOAA is they show you the radar maps they are basing their forecasts on. At least that way you can make an informed guess that is every bit as good as theirs is. Of course for real accuracy we watch the cows.
 
The wife and I were discussing the weather and realized one thing..there isn't anything we can do about it so we just have to live with whatever happens and go from there. I look at the NOAA Weather radar and see the same thing the weather 'experts' see. I say what is going to happen and so far I have beat out the experts for my neck-of-the-woods. Need to wait a little longer to see how this new system is moving before I'll stick my neck out.
 
Here in the Mountains of Colorado we know from experience that it will be winter from November to April and then Spring and Summer. We are used to it. Warm or Cold (we never have hot), Rain, Snow or Sun, it's all the same to us.

From late March to sometime in November all of the cows will be grazing on Early spring pasture, then Summer Range, and then again after about late August on hay meadows that have been mowed and baled.

From the first good snows in November through the winter, every day, no exception, our tractors and bale processors will be out every morning spreading hay to the cows in the various meadows on our ranches. Then, about the first of February every year, we gather the cows from the different Meadows and bring all of them in to the closer meadows close to our corrals. Then in February we begin to feed the hay a little later each day, starting just after daylight in the morning about the first of February so that by the end of February we are feeding starting at about mid afternoon.

By the end of February all of the hay is out by dark and the first cows are ready to calve. The heavies are brought in to the corrals every day, we check four times each day, and they are fed in the corrals while calving. Then out they go with their new calves after about 4 days or so to a clean meadow.

By the March all of our cows have calves and all are on the fresh meadows to start taking advantage of the first grass of spring along with the hay still fed.

This happens every year on our ranches so it doesn't matter what the weather happens to be every day. Weather is weather here and we never shut down anything. The cows don't care so we don't either. I do sympathies with those of you who have to put up with weather in the cities however. We are fortunate to have equipment that makes the weather less of a problem here in Colorado.

Saw pictures of bare shelves in grocery stores on the news today. Between people stocking up and no deliveries the stores have been cleaned out. :shock:

That's what I do. Back in 1970 when I got hired on to the Weather Bureau, quite a few of us were non-degreed people who'd been trained in the military. We'd take the weather observations, fly the balloons, do the local forecasts, warnings, literally the whole ball of wax with guidance from the state forecast office. After a few years in an area, one gets the feel for what the weather does for that area and the local forecasts are usually quite accurate.
Then the Weather Bureau was changed to the national Weather Service with emphasis on the word "service". :roll: Yup! In a pig's rear end. Things went slowly down hill from there. Those ex-military began to be slowly forced out to accommodate young smartasses with degrees. When I transferred to Tucson, 7 of us were ex-GI. (1979) Today only one is left and forecasts are maybe 50 percent on.
I remember one young dude arguing with me on the forecast. He says to me, "I'm the one with the degree." I said back, "Yup, a degree of stupidity." Got serious butt reaming for that one. When I had enough time in to retire I pulled the plug. Frankly I feel lucky enough they didn't force me out to make room for another smart aleck kid that didn't know squat other than book learning. That was not the case in a couple of other forecast offices. :x Between my military time and the NWS, I put in 33 years working in weather. Today, too much emphasis on computer models and other things like Doppler radar have reduced a forecaster's ability to maybe think for himself and disagree with the models.
Used to have a wisecrack when people asked my what I did. I said "I was a weatherman. You know, paid liar." Kept their wisecracks at bay. :lol:

For the past three or four days it's been really warm here in San Francisco which means lots of people out at Ocean Beach, the Zoo, etc. Folks getting dragged out to sea in the undertow, CG helicopters, no beer at the beer store and so forth.

About half an hour ago, the air conditioning kicked in: the good ol' fog bank is blowing across the City, scattering the tourists and natives like mice. Soon things will be back to normal, which is to say, dank.

Ahhhhh....foghorns.

Why the current attention and surprise by the citizens at large regarding the weather? I seem to recall having weather events for the entire 57 years, 11 months and 7days of my life. Have I been living in a different physical world than all these current alarmists???

Let's look back about 20 years ago and remember that the TV service wasn't what it is today. Not nearly as many stations and 'experts' predicting what was going to happen. Most of what I know about weather I learned in ground school. When you fly that is one item that IS really important to understand. Cause and effect. Just because I can't fly anymore doesn't mean I suddenly got stupid. I was once told that a 'degree' in something didn't make you smart; it just meant that you had satisfactorily completed a course of instruction.
On another note the wife just got back fro the local grocery store where she went to get a pound of de-caf coffee for herself. She said it was a 'zoo'. Seems as though no one is ever 'prepared' for anything. You would think that we were expecting 10 ft when we are told we may have 3-6". If we get more than 3" I will be surprised.

There are plenty of weather condition variants in California, probably more so than any other state. Besides, Cali hasn't been my only place of residence in 57+ years...

One of the reason I love living with the weather here...even when it does get pretty bad it does clear up and warm up within a couple of days. I feel for those who live in real deep freeze conditions where it is horrible and the predictions are no end in sight in the immediate future.

No end in sight? FYI we got the Burpee (garden seed) catalog last week. Spring is just around the corner. :)

Of course the Algorite cultists are going to say it's manmade global whatever.
 
Hey Selena ? Do you also judge the percentage, chance of rain by how many cows are laying down ? My uncle, the retired rocket scientist gets the biggest laugh when we tell him that !
 
This past Saturday.... it was close to 70 degrees. Sunday morning it was colder. Then Sunday evening started a cold rain.... which turned to sleet.... which overnight turned to snow. Woke up Monday morning to approx 5-6" of snow and cold. This morning (Tues) when I got up it was 10 degrees.

I'm just sitting here sipping hot coffee and scrolling through Ruger Forum.

Will Rogers once said.... In Oklahoma, if you don't like the weather... just wait a minute! ;) So I am waiting.....
