Vaquero Question

I was just now reading an article that referred to a Ruger New Vaquero "3rd Generation" with the "Special Safety".

Please excuse my ignorance but what defines a New Vaquero as 3rd generation and what exactly is the special safety?

It's not exactly a safety, since single actions don't have a "flip off" type safety. It's more of a storage lock to keep the gun from being accessed and fired.

You have to remove the right hand grip panel to get to it or drill a hole in the grip panel to use the key with the lock. When in the locked position, the hammer can't be cocked.

The term 3rd generation is not a Factory term or a very common term used for Rugers. The original Vaquero w/large frame size might be considered the 1st Gen.
The New Vaq. w/mid size frame, w/o safety lock in the grip (if they made them) might be the 2nd gen and the current New Vaq. w/safety lock considered the 3rd gen Vaquero.
