The USPS has been an American institution since the founding. You can either be for it or against it! PEOPLE make the difference! So why throw out the baby with the bath water? Perhaps it should be outsourced like the business entities do, gotta give the third world countries economic opportunities! The pontifications are strong!

Like many institutions lately, the post office has gotten off-track because of politicians and our changing economy/society. What it really needs is support from all of us.
Tearing apart things like the post office, social security and medicare is insane.

Isn't it interesting that those three things you mention are all programs overseen, or run, by the federal
government. There are differing opinions on them, but the truth of the matter is that all three are in
deep trouble financially. I'll just use the USPS as one example.

Here are the losses incurred by the USPS over the last 10 years. If the USPS were a private company
it would have been bankrupt long ago.

2021 - $9.7 billion loss (projected)
2020 - $9.2 billion loss
2019 - $8.8 billion loss
2018 - $3.9 billion loss
2017 - $2.7 billion loss
2016 - $5.6 billion loss
2015 - $5.1 billion loss
2014 - $5.5 billion loss
2013 - $5 billion loss
2012 - $15.9 billion loss

Any guesses as to who ultimately foots the bill to make up for these losses?

The post office, as most people know, got screwed by congress in 2006. Until that time the post office was making money.

So yeah, lets get rid of the things that benny the people and give more to the corporate entities who are so good about looking after the peasants that they outsource jobs for equality! Must disagree on on the PO. It is too badly broken. My dad retired from the USPS in '86. It was already changing which is why he got out. There have been multiple attempts to rehabilitate it with no success. Ignoring the package delivery fiascos, my local delivery points to it's lack of organization.

I frequently go from two to four days without delivery. Now I'm not talking about just myself, but my entire neighborhood. At other times I've had two deliveries in a day and at least twice three. I've had Sunday deliveries. It's very obvious they either don't have a sufficient number of quality employees (something no governmental organization seems to attract) and / or a complete inability to properly schedule the handling of the mails.

THIS! Jimbo is 100 percent correct. The USPS is not a branch of the federal government and employees are not Federal employees. EVERY business in America that offers pensions would close and go bankrupt if they were held to the same insane pension pre-pay rules.

Corps do not get a tax deduction for expenses. They pay taxes on net profit, In fact corps should pay zero federal income tax as it is all paid by the consumer anyway as cost of goods sold

The USPS may not be a branch of the government, but as I said, it is run, or overseen, by the federal government. The federal government insisted on those "insane pension pre-pay rules". The government tells the USPS how to run its business.....and that will never change from here on out. AND, the USPS will never be competitive with private enterprise.

I placed an order a few weeks ago and the vendor managed to ship it via post office
rather than FedEx that I payed extra for...their screw up.
Post office tracking shows they delivered it to me last Thursday. As of today
they show it delayed.
These items were only about $100, they make more every day. and the vendor will
eventually re-send and eat the costs...and the stuff was not very time sensitive.
Just another entry in the growing postal screw up file.........

At least you got mail today. I didn’t get mine.

Several times a month I will not get my mail. Not sure why. Perhaps the mailman is just too busy that day? I saw the trucks out this afternoon, but nope, just no mail on my street today.

And no, this is not a one time thing. This is a regular occurance. On a regular basis, we do not seem to get mail on our street. For what ever reason…

We live out in da sticks, our mail delivered to the post-mounted box at the end of our long driveway. We have an exceptional delivery driver, who always gets the box door closed to protect the contents and he also brings stuff too big for the box right up to our door rather than leave a "you must pick this up at the post office" note. This performance is likely not common across the board of all delivery personnel, and we have expressed our appreciation to our guy on many occasions.

We've signed up for the service that emails an announcement of our pending deliveries for the day. It's not always right, but the fine print of the agreement warns of that. Our delivery guy just says it's about as accurate as we could expect "considering everything". :lol:

An update to my post above.
My original package is now listed on USPS "tracking" as being in Montana, my shop is in Michigan.
Well, both states start with the letter M so I can see the problem.

I was just talking with my wife about all the trash mail we receive. I pay ALL bills online, the only check I write is to the guy who mows our grass.

Am I REQUIRED to have a mailbox? Can I keep the postal guy off my property by claiming he is trespassing and littering?

Is it a law that I must willingly accept any mail that comes to my door?

I'm only halfway joking. But just because some company wants to send me an advertisement for a new auto lease, do I have to take it?

Observation, as a former postal employee: do you "not get your mail" or is there "no mail for you to get"? My carrier drives by the house six days a week. He stops two or three of those times, IF there is any mail for me. Otherwise he drives on to the neighbors' boxes, stopping if they may have mail. He doesn't stop to chat if he has nothing for us.

I understand what you are saying. And I would guess we just don’t get the mail we are supposed to receive that day. When we first moved to DFW, I had several magazine subscriptions, but they would come some months, but not each and every month. It was sporadic at best.

But no, I’m talking about just not getting any mail some days. And you can tell we were supposed to, because when it happens, the next day we have lots of mail.

I honestly cannot remember in other towns where we’ve lived any day when we just didn’t have mail to get that day. With all the junk mail and flyers etc.
