US Mint changing the Silver Eagle

I just learned that the design of the Silver Eagle from the US Mint is being retired and a new design being introduced starting in the middle of the year. The new design has the eagle in flight with wings upswept.

Personally, I liked the old design better, which was sort of the seal of the United States. It had the eagle with the oak branches and arrows in its talons, the shield, and thirteen stars over. The obverse is still the walking liberty, though. Beautiful coins.

Not uncommon to make changes. Especially in these last several years,, by changing things,, collectors buy (invest) and do not use. They sell, (for a profit,) and make money that way.

But I also like the "older" designs myself as well.

I believe it's good because it will increase the value of the originals which are getting more and more valuable as collectibles.
Check the prices of the older ones now.

I began a proposition with the children at my church in which I awarded them a Silver Eagle in 2004 and so far have been able to get Silver Eagles of that date. Maybe once or twice I could not find 2004, but most have borne that date.

I still have a pair of the 1986 S Silver Eagles I bought when they first came out. Think I paid 20 bucks each for them maybe a bit less.

When I first started my award, they were eleven dollars each bought in full rolls of ten. I bought twenty, two rolls, for $220. The "rolls" were rigid plastic wrapped containers.

Whoa! "S" mint mark? That would have been San Francisco. I thought all Silver Eagles were minted at West Point?

I’d have to double check, but I don’t believe West Point was up and running until the early 90’s.
