I have taken 9 Black bear over the years using my 2nd gen Colt SAA 5 1/2 in 45 using a Keith 255 SWC over 9 grains of Unique This year I plan on using 777 3fg has anyone here used such a load? I know to fill the case and slight compression Yet I was wondering what kind of FPS to expect.

I thank you

according to Lyman Goex fffg at 35.5gr should produce about 1100fps and a lot of gray smoke...

Loaded by weight (not volume) :

21g 777 3F under 255g SWC gets you 877fps.

with a 250g RNFP

22g 777 3F 885 fps
23g 777 3F 919 fps
24g 777 3F 939 fps

All shot out of 5 1/2" barrel orginal Vaquero

Never tested 9.0g of Unique under 255 SWC, but I did Universal which is comparable. I got 1049fps. Point is, you'll have a tad less velocity with 777 load.

That sounds like a blast. My everyday shooting load for my 5.5 inch blackhawk is your exact load, 9 grains of Unique and a 255 Keith. Its a great load, isn't it!

Best of luck with the black powder load. I've always wanted to try some but always end up talking myself out of it. If you have a chance to connect, I don't doubt that it will flatten that bear. It's basically the original factory load with a much better bullet.

Please keep us updated with this awesome project!!!

Black Bear, handgun range, lots of smoke.... what could go wrong?

That is some real adventure spirit right there. :D :D

Yes I have used that load for CAS along with Goex 3F and Pyrodex.
The directions for Triple 7 says not to compress the load and I don't. They also say not to use 3F in cartridges, but I do and have been for about 10 years. You will probably get about 35Grs in the 45 case with a 255 gr. bullet. It will have about 10% more power than 3F Goex. It will be a pretty stout load and shoots harder than Goex more like smokeless.

I think the 23g (by weight) load above is just slightly compressed (if I remember correctly) . Like this load a lot. Also what is nice is you can use your regular powder measure with 777, so loading 777 is just like any other smokeless powder except it fills the case more.

I am not sure why not to compress, as I use it just like BP in my other BP guns (ROAs, 1858 ..) . Ram the ball home over a load of 777 and some cream of wheat and seems to shoot just fine.

I was told just last week that 777 is 10% hotter than ether Gerox or Pyrodex given equal weight/volume .I know in my CVA inline using 2 50 gr pellets of 777 causes much more plasitc fouling off my .50 cal 295gr Pylomer tiped Power belt bullets than 2 50gr pyrodex pellets does. That very well could be the reason .When I've shot 3 pyrodex pellets I get the same amount of plastic fouling that I do w/2 777 pellets,, but thats way more power than I need for deer sised game with that bullet out to the gun/calibers max renge of 200 yards with that bullet . 100 gr's is plenty . Besides uping the powder by 1/3 doubbles the felt recoil, it just ain't worht it to me .
i realize y'all are talking cased cartrige loads here ,but the powder effects should be the same no matter what platforum your using the powder in .

Lou,
You are correct on the 10% more power. More power equals more fire and heat. That is why you are getting the burned/melted plastic. The same happens when I shoot the SxS with BP or sub. To get it out just swab down with Windex or Ballistol mix 1part Ballistol 10 parts water and wait 10-15 minutes and it will come right out with a brass brush or a wad of paper towel. I assume you can take the breech block out of those new fangled shooters.
Pyrodex is about the last thing you want to use because it is more corrosive than BP or the other Subs. I think it was the 1st of the subs now better ones are out there IMHO

Jim .
your right about pyrodex still being more corrosive that 777or gorex ,but my inline shots better groups with it .I clean it after every range session or if I shoot it while hunting .I use just dawn and hot water and give her a good scrubing .After hunting season I then use Shooters Choice, that stull really cleans out the plastic fouling and I have a tool that a guy here in .va. invented that matches the lands and grooves thats made to help get the plastic fouling out of your smoke pole if you shoot sabots or plastic based bullete like the CVA Power Belts .

And yes it does have a removable breech plug .The bore on the gun looks just like it did brfore I ever shot it .Nice, bright and shinny, but I take care of my guns .
My CVA Hawken has never had anything but Pyrodex shot in it and it's has at least 1,000 rounds through it ,but I clean it real good too and again the bore is still nice and shinny. I shoot T.C. 395 gr Expanders conacals pure lead bullets in it .It's a .54 cal and I load 90 gr of powder in it and that thing is a deer thumper .I've never has one go more than 30 or so yards and most drop like a rock when I hit them with it .I take the bbl off of it and let it soak in hot water with dawn in it for about 10 minuites and then clean and oil her up good .

It still has the same Hot Shot nipple I bought for it when I bought the gun in 1992.Again I take good care of my guns .My Dad was a Sergent in the Army and drumed weapon maintance into me .

I'm almost done wjth my .45 Flintlock kentuckey rifle build and that will only have Gorex FFFg shot through it .I use a Mortous & peatal to grind [very gengelry] the FFFg into a real fine powder for the flint, can't see the sence in buying a whole pound of FFFFg that would go bad before I ever used all of it .I just make enough to keep my Priming horn full[not much at all] and I'm set .

That thing it surprizinglly accurate .I use .440 pure lead pound balls and.15 patches over 90 gr's of powder and at 50 yards if I do my part it will shoot an inch group from the rest for 3/4 shots then she starts to fall off becauce of the fouling, but with that gun I'll load feash loads every day I hunt with it so she'll get a good cleaning every night that I use it .
I'll tell ya , that flintlock is a lot of fun and even more so with that than the percushion cap Hawken you really gotta make the first shot count when hunting with it .
If I can't get a real clean shot just into the back of the shoulder ,right at the front of the lungs ,the deer walks .I won't take a chance on wounding an animal. You bust up that shoulder and clip the lungs and that deer ain't going very far .The Hawken is a differnt story it hits so hard the a shot anywhere in the kill zone and ,like I said most times the drop right there .

Thanks for the tips on cleaning i'll try it out and see if it's faster than the way I've been doing it .

Lou,
I also so have a hot shot nipple on my Lyman Plains Rifle and it has never failed to fire. On my Pennsylvania Flintlock I use Goex 3F in the pan and not to much. After loading the Pan I turn it a little to the side and tap it with palm of my hand. Kind of gets some grains in the flash hole. There is no delay when firing. That is the way they shoud fire not like you see in the movies with poooof-------------------Bang:D :D

Have you ever retrieved a 50 cal pure lead ball after firing into a jug of water. Let me tell you it is very impressive. It ends up very flat with a large diameter. That is one of the reasons for so many amputees in The War of Northern Aggression. Probably the same as when it hits a Deer

No Jim I never have recoverd a round ball. I have seen mini'e [ correst spelling ,form me of all people LOL] recoverd from battlesields and I've recovered ONE of those .54 cal cons. from a deer I shot 130 yards + in the left fromt shoulder and it was just under the skin at his right rump. Big around as a quarter and thick as a stack of 3 of them with just a hint of the base of the bullet left .That was a BIG bodied deer for Va 200 pounds and some change feild dressed , but a rather small 7 point rack .

Not having never hunted with pound patched balls before I'm just going on what I've beed told .
Do you think a heart shot with them would be ethacal with in reasonable ranges ? Say 100 yards or less? the guns capabale of doing that and I can keep the shot in a 6" cicle at 100 yards offhand, that's well with in the "sweet spot" for a clean kill .
It of coures has fixed sights on it and I've set them 2" high at 50 yards, which should put me right at piont blank at 100 yards . Thats the max range I'm willing to thke a shot with that flintlock .I've installed a new German silver front blade and an old style slip ajustalbe buckhorrn rear sitgt on my Hawken and on the high notch she's about 2 1/2 " low at 200 yards so I'll take that shot .
I have yardage markers every 50 yards in the only feild I hunt B.P in so I know where to set the sight in that gun .
Most of the time Ii use my inline when hunting thar field anyway unless I'm have a guest that doesn't have a B.P. rifle ,if I do I let them use the scoped inline in that field and I shoot my trusty old Hawken .I know I can hit with that gun at 200 yards .
Please tell me what you think .
Thanks ,Your Friend,
Lou
