I have a new target 10/22 with the hammer forged barrel. I want to thread the end to support an AAC can. My LGS says this barrel can't be threaded due to the forged barrel which would decrease accuracy. What do the masses say?

Properly done, threading the muzzle shouldn't have a negative affect on accuracy.

I agree with 9x19, but will add it might actually result in a better rifle for less money to swap the hammer forged barrel for a threaded aftermarket barrel, like a Feddersen, and sell the hammer forged barrel.

Here is another option .. .. ..

Surf around their sight they have many options besides the one I listed.

Even Cabelas sells cool .22 barrels.

If you search the web on hammer forged barrels, there are a couple of articles, lost the bookmark, but found it again. This talks about how Ruger makes these barrels:

Did not read again, but here are stresses created when barrels are hammer forged. If you cut away material from the outside of the barrel, the material left moves inwards. In the case of threading the end of the barrel, this may be a good thing on a 22 barrel, as you will create "choke" at the end of the barrel, and it may be a more accurate barrel.

I'd have a good gun smith do it!

Going to post elsewhere on the forum, as others may be interested.

One of the guys who helped write the article is some professor at Purdue U.

I used a standard 10-22 new take off barrel my gun pusher had around his shop. Their gunsmith threaded it for me and I use it with an Outback II suppressor. I have only shot it out to 50 yards but it is as accurate as any standard 10-22 factory barrel.

I saved my standard barrel that came with the gun if I ever want to return it to standard configuration.
