we saw a squirrel in a tree eating a chipmunk a few years ago out in Roaming Shores ,Ohio....tree rats is VERY appropriate

I've told this before, but...............:
Years ago I was talking to my wife over the telephone while I was at work. She said, "A peach fell out of the oak tree and nearly hit me."
I told her, "Babe, peaches don't fall out of oak trees, acorns fall out of oak trees. Peaches fall out of peach trees."
Well, of course a squirrel had stolen a peach from a neighbor's tree (a peach tree) and dropped it as he was bringing it home.

You know, I post an unusual, unique photo and individuals turn it into negativity. Now I am very nearly 86 and have spent the majority of my life in the country. I have never seen any "destruction" caused by a squirrel. I have plunked a few in the butt with a BB gun when they were in my bird feeders but generally leave them alone. Perhaps all that I have encountered are more domesticated than in other locations.
tree rats is what they are... cute until they find a way into your house and start chewing on the wiring....
good neighbor who we really like feeds them about a quart of seeds and nuts a day... she doesn't even like it when we kill a copperhead... she got upset the other day when a big red tailed hawk swooped down and tried to get one of 'her' squirrels which myself and another neighbor thought was kind of hypocritical since the hawk has the 'right' to live too. And the only way it is going to live is to eat fresh live critters like those squirrels.

Frank,, While you may have not seen the destruction squirrels cause,, I do almost daily.
Yes,, your picture is interesting because you don't see them carrying a piece of pizza up a tree all the time. But,, in cities etc,, yep,, more common than you'd think. But it's still a neat picture!
A redeeming quality about squirrels,, they taste very good.
Destruction by squirrels.
My business, is animal damage control. The two most common animals I deal with are bats & squirrels. More often,, flying squirrels than gray squirrels. They find a gap, crack, or whatever,, and chew an opening to get into the house. A flying squirrel likes a hole to be about 1-1/2" diameter. A gray squirrel likes a hole to be about 3" in diameter.
Once inside,, they nest. And they raise babies.
Yes,, they can & do chew exposed wiring insulation & have caused fires in some cases. This is very dangerous.
They can also chew an opening to get into the living quarters. Especially if they scent a goof food source.
Flying squirrels create a repetitive "toilet site" which can & will cause home damage.
And my most common complaint,, is the noise of the flying squirrels running around in the ceiling space. That's when the homeowner realizes they have a problem.
And I hear this all the time; "I've lived here in this house for years & have never had a problem!"
My reply?
"No,, you didn't have a problem until you discovered you did have a problem."
But squirrels are also very intelligent.
I've seen several studies on them, and they have proven they can be quite good at figuring out ways to overcome obstacles to get to a food source.

Kool picture. I like Squirrels, the are cute and funny. I have two or three in the backyard on a daily basis that I feed along with the birds which include Doves, Pigeons, Blackbirds, Blue Jays and Cardinals. I even like the neighbors cat that comes over for attention every day also. A little bit of birdseed and a few peanuts go a long way at this house. The cat needs a bell around it's neck though.

I use my RUGER pellet rifle to pop the ones raiding my woodpecker feeding block in its holder. If they expire and fall to the ground I feed it to the local cats !

Deer canine teeth. The man who mounted 2 deer heads for me this last season, did an European mount on a big Kansas buck. And it had rare, canine tooth in top teeth. Then I found articles on this subject. Many years ago, deer use to be carnivorous. Very interesting to read about. Article said mice, small birds,,,, critters like that.

I hope the chippermunk got his pizza from Grimaldi's. I just had one from there (the tomatoes/sauce is awesome!!!). I also picked up some .45 ammo and another magazine for my AR. I got an $25 gift card in the mail yesterday and it was burning a hole in my wallet. STILL no .30 WCF (or .30-.30 cal. as you youngins call it).
Well, they are fun to watch -- and they taste good in goulash!
My mom used feed a couple feral cats that roamed around the property. One winter she put out a big ham shank bone with meat still on it in the snow filled backyard and after some period of time she was in the kitchen and looked out the window and saw a squirrel dragging it into a bush.
