I expect most all of we .45 LC lovers have read Linebaugh's ".45 Colt Myth" writing, some of us likely have the data memorized! :lol:

Have both good articles in my 'notebook' on the .45 Colt.

Thing is, it's nice to know the .45 Colt has 'the' potential... but standard .45 Colt loads work jussst fine for the majority of my shooting needs .

I've loaded some hot loads in 45 colt. Thru my Vaquero they bite hard. Thing is if I wanted 44 magnum power I would buy a 44 mag. gun. Shooting 9gr of unique under 250gr XTP. will take care of anything I point it at here in PA. 7.5gr under 250gr lead is my play load. And they don't bite at all :!: :wink:

If I wanted .44 mag power, I'd buy a .44 mag. If I wanted MORE, I'd go with a .45 Blackhawk... :wink:

BTW, 9 grs UNQ/250 gr is fairly mild, under 1,000 fps, and OK to shoot in a postwar Colt "Model P"....(Hornady's dope, not mine :wink

I JUST got a MiHec bullet mold (Cramer style) to cast a bullet long enough forward from the crimp groove that it will only chamber in a Ruger. With the hollow point these weigh in at 304 grains +/- .5 grains with 40:1 lead:tin The hollow points will sit atop of enough HS-6 to get them to about 1000fps ...I'll work up from John Linebaugh's starting numbers.

I have not cast any solid rounds yet. All I have to do is turn the spuds upside down for that. My solid rounds will be out of wheel weight with about 1 1/2% tin added for good fill-out. I'm told it should be about a 320 grain round. These, I will use H110 and work up to 1300fps.

DEEP pentagonal hollow point should make these an excellent low to medium velocity round on deer size game.

This is my first mold from MiHec, but is won't be my last. His workmanship is second to none!

.454" is the old diameter and pretty much reserved for older guns or those with over sized throats.
There is a much better supply and variety of bullets in the .452" range than the .454" ones.

I asked Miha if he could supply me with an oversize 270 SAA HP mold for my large throat .45 NM and he came up with a prototype mold that drops .4555" bullets. Sized/lubed to .454", the WW alloy bullets weigh 275, 280 and 289 grs depending on nose configuration...Those are beauties pps!

BTW, I agree with you and Dale on quality, my MP brass mold is the finest I've ever used and dropped perfect bullets right from the git go.... 8) Hope he designs a similar mold in the 325-350 gr range...

Thanks, but I'll be sizing to .454". I like the throats a little open because the only thing I want swaging down the size of the bullet is the forcing cone and barrel. My service six leaded severely. Turns out the throats were tighter than the groove diameter of the barrel. Once opened up...nearly all the leading was gone.

I'm not worried about the lack of variety in .454 bullets, as I'll only be shooting what I cast/size.

FYI, we are now running GB (group buy) for 45-503-SWC boolit. This one is direct offshoot of famous H&G #503 Keith designed for 44 magnum. I was toying what will happen if this boolit is just enlarged in dia to get .454. Here is the result:

In return, you will get high quality mould, many claim that Miha makes the best quality moulds available today.

Haven't found any Fed cases for sale locally so have stuck with new WW and only reload "nuke level" a couple times....(Love that term! :lol: )
Any case is gonna bulge some at higher pressure levels in Ruger's oversize charge holes, and I don't resize that portion of the case.....

Works for me.. :wink:

(Would try some Fed if I could find 'em though.. :? )

I'm sad to say they are still sitting in a loading block (along with a couple of other blocks of loaded up MP 270s) while the damn rain/sleet/snow keeps hammering these parts.... :x

I expect the chrono/accy sessions are gonna take a couple of days once I finally burn some powder!

Well I have the gas checks and the 44 mold in hand....... Time for me to stand on the OM Super with some H-110 and see what kind of accuracy I get. Hopefully the mailman will bring my other 45 Mihec mold this week too. Maybe I need to skip tilling the garden and get to smelting

Holy Cow! :shock: I'll stick with Seyfried's ideas....... quoted from his article that's referenced in this thread.....

"Maximum loads occur just before or when the base of the bullet makes contact with the powder in the case, using H-110 or W-296 powder only! Any degree of compression can create excess pressure."

I've been subscribing to that logic for many, many years......and get 1,500 fps out of a 335 gr. gas checked cast bullet when fired in my F-A .454.
