Super Blackhawk in 44 mag vs Blackhawk in45 colt question?

Hi all,
A recent thread prompts this question; is the Super Blackhawk in 44 mag made out of different material than the Blackhawk in 45 colt?
Are there frame size differences also? I'm not asking about smaller flat tops or three screws, rather the new models with transfer bars.

Same main frame, different grip frame. The Super Blackhawk has a steel grip frame that is longer, the 45 Blackhawk uses the aluminum XR3-RED. This of course is for Blued examples.

The 45 Colt is also chambered in the New Model Flat Top Blackhawk Mid-size frame.

Just FYI: All Ruger single actions use the same steel. The newer limited edition Blackhawk large calibers in .480 and 454 have different heat treatment and/or different barrel steel if I recall correctly.

they are both an alloy of 4140 chrome moly steel casting....as noted above, some high pressure calibers the heat treat is what will be different, and also the various "special" frame sizes ala the "flatops" of TODAY.............and then there is various grip frame sizes as well as number of chambers in some of the cylinders, 5 shot, 6 shot, and the 22' cal 8 shot, 9 shot and even a "Single10",,,,,,,,,,,,,,:rolleyes:;)

I hadn’t seen that article before, and I’m a big 45 Colt fan. To add another warning; Don’t shoot “hot .45LC loads in the “New Vaquero” mid-frame models, OR the newer flat top Blackhawks. There’s a good article about this on Buffalo Bore’s website.

I bought my NM Blackhawk after much research on the .45 Colt. Jonm Linebaugh pioneered the Big Bore revolver, loading the superior .45 Colt to it's full potential. The desision was pay for the over rated .44 with it's .42 diameter boolit or pay less for the .45 Colt and have more killing power with hand loads.

They can't help themselves, but to answer your question, the cylinder frames of the guns you mention are the same size and made of the same material.

Other than the caliber, the main difference is the grip frame. New Model Blackhawk in 45 has the aluminum XR3-RED grip frame unless it is a stainless steel model then the grip frame is stainless steel. Super Blackhawk with a 7.5 inch or longer barrel has a 0.25 inch longer steel grip frame with a square (standard) or round (Super Blackhawk Hunter) trigger guard. Super Blackhawk models with a 4.62 or 5.5 inch barrel have the standard XR3-RED size grip frame. New Model Blackhawk grip frames can be and are frequently swapped. Some people prefer the longer Super Blackhawk steel grip frame on a standard Blackhawk like the 45.

I own a Ruger .45 Colt Flattop Convertible, and I can only shoot the max load of 1,214 ft. lbs. of ME, and it is quite a wallop! In specific, this is the Buffalo Bore 3C/20, They make two more powerful .45LC rounds: (1) 1,344 ft. lbs 3K/20, and (2) 1,267 ft. lbs. 3A/20. I normally shoot with just one hand, arm fully extended, but when I shoot this high powered round (3A), I have to use two hands to hold onto the gun.
