I want to put a SBH hammer in my Lipsey .44 Spl. Looking at the Numrich Arms site I see the factory and their "wide spur" hammers. Does anyone have any experience with the wide spur?

The Super Blackhawk & I believe the Montado both have a wide spur. Many feel they work better than the normal hammers in their hands.

Lot of people like the what they "look" better...but as for me, it is function over form and I much prefer the regular hammer.

I find that when shooting one-handed, the SBH gammer can easily be cocked without me having to shift my "pinky under the grip" grip. I can also do it with a Colt or regular BH hammer, but it's so much more of a stretch that it throws my wrist-angle off........if ya get my drift.
On the other hand....these days I mostly shoot two-handed and use the thumb of my support hand to cock the hammer. The "regular" hammer works better for me for that.

Hope that helped.

A 'Super' hammer looks nice and makes thumbing a revolver easy. I never really cared for the really tall regular hammers and much prefer the 'Super" or 'Bisley' hammers. :D

Just drops in so go for it. Out 30 bucks is all if you don't like it. And you could probably resell the hammer too and break even.

You might check out Brownell's. I just ordered two "Super" Blackhawk hammers yesterday for my SS .44 specials. I have them in all my Blackhawks. Brownell's stock #780-000-535wb @ $29.99 each. They had them in stock and cheaper than Numerich. I ordered spring kits and other spare parts and processing/shipping was under $8 for all. Plus they offer "NRA Add-a-buck" if you're into that sort of thing - I am.

I say go for it! I recently installed a SBH hammer in my Lipsey's 45. It's a cheap, easy project and gives you an opportunity to personalize a bit. Here's my thread with input from a more experienced member...

I did some more research via the link on the SBH hammer swap. Honestly, because of the fit of the SBH hammer to the New Vaquero frame ears I don't think that I will do it. It just seems a sloppy fit. Functional, but sloppy. HOWEVER, I found this write up while surfing.

The answer seems to be a Bisley hammer. Granted, you have to do some work but you won't get the hammer sitting low in the frame. If you are careful it will be a perfect match. Any thoughts?

I went bisley on my project too. It is wide like the super but just a bit lower. Same price point so go for it. Again, I'm sure you could always resell if you don't like it.

My 44 Flat Top. The Montado hammers (same as SBH but spur is checkered instead of grooved) have the proper size base, but hard to find.

Power Custom now makes Montado hammer copies and are a drop in, but 3 times the cost!

The Bisley is a good alternative.

Since there are no wide hammers for the single sixes, I too, resorted to Bisley hammers but with slight mods to the spur.
New Model .22 also with Bisley trigger:

Hi Mike,

I haven't received e-mail notifications of new posts on this forum for months so I never realized I hadn't responded to your last post in the above thread:

Jim,

Can you use a dressed down Bisley hammer with the OEM New Vaquero trigger or must the trigger be Bisley also?
Thanks,
Mike

You can use the Bisley hammer with the OEM standard trigger in all models, no modifications required.

If Ruger would just sell the Montaldo hammers to the general public life would be sooo much easier.

Mike,

The answer that I've been told by Ruger is that because the Montado NVs are a Lipseys 'distributor exclusive' Model and the hammers are unique to that model, by selling the hammers to the general public compromises the exclusivity of the Montado model. So I asked how would a Montado owner get a replacement if needed? I was told they must order from Lispseys or a gunsmith. So if you have a local gunsmith, you might ask to have one ordered for you. I bought a couple from a gunsmith who had them in his inventory. I'm told that if you order a hammer from Lipseys, they want the serial # of your Montado. Any that wants to try that, send me a PM and I'll give you the serial # of my Montado.

When the Montado 1st came out I ordered them thru Brownells, but as you found out, that's no longer an option. Maybe Lipseys complained to Ruger about it. But think the real reason is that so many were being purchased as parts, Ruger couldn't keep sufficient inventory for the production of Montado models.

I know Ruger has told me that in the past about parts for standard production models when I've tried to order parts. They said to call back in the future to try and order. They did that with Super BH hammers for awhile and the new free spin pawls for the NV and Flat Top BHs. You can't order the early Montado grip frame with grooved fore strap either.

Strangely enough, I don't use the Montado hammer in my Montado. I swapped hammers with my Flat Top Blackhawk which also has the large base hammer to fit the GF ears:

And use a standard hammer in my NV 44 Sheriffs model in place of that long funky new hammer they come with:
