I just got my new Super Blackhawk stainless hammer from Ruger, only took six days from when I ordered it. Now any advice on swapping it out in my Vaquero Sheriff's .44 special? I've never opened up a Ruger single action. I've watched UTUBE video's a couple of times and copied Hondo44"s page on just swapping the hammer. Any other advice would be welcome. I want to carry this revolver as my main carry gun, I'm changing the hammer because the stock one pokes me in the side. I've gotten a little round in the middle in my old age!!! Thanks for any advice!

No time like the present. Just go slow and keep the parts separated and have the instructions nearby. If I can do it, anybody can do it. Next thing you know you will be taking it apart just for the fun of it. :D
After changing the hammer check the function (unloaded of course) and made sure everything works smoothly and do a couple of push-off tests by pushing on the hammer to make sure it doesn't slip-off the sear. :D

Jimbo has a good point about checking the sear engagement.
Being's how this is to be your "main carry gun", you'll also need to check for transfer bar pinch. To do that, do this:
Unload the gun.
Double check that it is unloaded.
Grasp the gun normaly, cock the hammer and hold it back with your off hand.
Press and hold the trigger while slowly lowering the hammer to it's firing postition.
Once the hammer is all the way down, let go of the hammer.
With the hammer at rest, release the trigger. The trigger should move forward on it's own.
If it does, all is well.
If it don't, it's because the hammer has pinched the transfer bar against the frame.....which sooner or later, will lead to the bar breaking....which in turn means that your gun aint going to fire untill the bar get's replaced.
For now, we'll hope that your's will be OK.....but if it aint, there's two ways to fix it:
Thin the bar, or modify the step of the hammer that contacts the bar.
Take a close look at how them two areas interact and you'll see what I'm getting at.

Got my new hammer installed this morning! Was a pretty easy job thanks to everyone's advice! I was able to just change out the hammer without completely removing all of the parts using Hondo44's tip. Did all the tips on safety checks and everything worked fine. The only thing that slowed me up was when I was trying to get the grip frame back on I couldn't quite get it to line up until I realized I needed to push the trigger return spring up and over the top of the trigger, then all fell into place! Thanks again for all the help!
