Single-Sixer
I have a OM Vaquero XRN_3 frame. The last 2 digits of the S/N are electro-penciled on the upper right hand side of the grip frame. Is this normal?? Thanx Stash

It's because the steel grip frames as on your Vaquero are actually fitted to the cylinder frame. They put the numbers on them so they can identify which cylinder frame they go with on assembly.
The alloy grip frames such as on the Blackhawks are not fitted to the cylinder frames and need no identifying numbers on them.

Your Vaquero ain't no OM. It's an early Vaquero and the newer versions, by golly, are labeled New Vaquero........... :roll:

jadek, gee you catch on........no such thing as an "early model Vaquero..."they are ALL Vaqueros, till the New Vaquero came.......
Mrs Ward, my "old" English tacher would have a field day with some of 'stuff' that comes out on here, nouns beings used as adjectives, and vice versa.....
and as I recall, I do NOT think the Ruger company ever used "old model" in any of their ads, until the "
safety conversion program" was instituted............
and then there are "flat tops......" :roll:

And yes, that is the marks they use to "match" components to one another, and as Cary can tell you even then there are variations from one frame to another,,,,I recall Glenn Snook from Bar S grips, telling us how many different Vaquero frames he had gotten from Ruger and even the locating pins were "wrong" ( drilled off center...) so to properly fit ANY grip panels , they actually should work off of each individual gun........thats why Colt used to charge $65 to "fit" your new grips to any of their single actions.. :wink:

Well since you mentioned grip locator pins drill off center, I'll show some pics to back that up. These pics show the New steel XR3 grip frame. The "bad" frame is from a customer. The "good" frame is mine and is the one I use for fitting if the customer is not willing to send me his grip frame. You can see how the same stock plastic Ruger grip fits on both frames.
This bad frame in the pic is not the only one I've seen like that. What I've been telling people is to look at how your stock plastic grips fit. Since they are injection molded, I figure them to be pretty much exactly the same on size. So I figure that since a stock grip fits my frame very good, that's how a set of my off the shelf grips will fit their gun.

That looks like a lot of variation. But it's not surprising considering how many thousands of these Ruger's made.
As far as I'm concerned when a person spends as much money as good quality custom grips costs it just makes sense to send in the grip frame for proper fitting.
Other wise just go buy a generic set of grips and save your money.
