A woman came home to fine her roof shingles on the lawn.

Interesting in that I had a similar situation a couple years ago. I had just added aluminum outer paneling to my garage and had new shingle installed in the process. About a month later we contracted to replace the shingles on our home. I happened to be looking out the window and noticed one of the contractors ripping the shingles off the garage. I went out a "HOLLERED at them to stop; that the garage was not part of the contract. Unfortunately they had destroyed the shingles they removed and I had no spares. Ended up I now have my garage and home with the same type.
 
I am in the market for a new roof. Currently there are four layers of shingles/tile on it. New codes say you can only have two layers. I would be happy with just one as I think it will outlast me.
 
I was working on a house a few years back for a couple that had just bought it after the home had been flipped by some contractor. One morning I showed up and there was a full section of roofing about 6x6 feet in the front yard. After some inspecting I determined the nail gun the roofers were using had too much pressure the the room nails had gone all the way through the shingles.... and what held that section together was the sealing strip under the shingles...

If you actually read the instructions of how to install fiberglass shingles I don't see how it can be done properly with a nail gun... at least with how I've seen roofers doing it... as fast as possible. The nail head is supposed to be absolutely flush and just tight against the shingle.
 
We had a metal roof installed last year.
An Amish contractor.
We had him install new soffit, fascia, gutters, downspouts, gutter guards.
I don’t know how many sq. ft. Probably about 20 sg.
$8600.
Excellent job!
Very happy with their work.
Should outlast me and my wife.
Looks good too.

The roof should be stripped down to the roof decking and then felt and new shingles installed. Not doing so shortens the life of the roof by a considerable amount. Installing new shingles over a single layer of old shingles is bad enough, over 3 or 4 layers is a disaster to life expectancy of the new roof.
 
In Buffalo NY there was a firefighter that had a roof with 8 layers of shingles fall on him while he was in the attic of the house working on the blaze. His air pack ran out of oxygen before he could be rescued and he suffered permanent injuries because of it. I believe that the building codes were changed after that to allow only 2 layers of shingles before the roof has to be stripped to the decking

Just for information. They air packs do not use oxygen in them as it is flammable. Simply compressed air.
 
Now here’s a topic on which I am an expert. Years if training culminating in actual experience.

Falling through a roof can be caused for many reasons. Weakened roofs from age, damage, poor construction, termites or fire to name a few. In my cases it was an abandoned & neglected WWII temporary construction building and a recently built illegal and not to code internal structure.

Common observations. It hurts, a lot. Parts get broken, bruised, bent and there is bleeding. If your air pack is rated at 30 minutes and you have about a normally 20 minute supply left it will now last less than 10. That darned low pressure bell will drive you crazy. At least until it starts to slow dramatically. Then you get mad at it and as it slows almost to a stop the praying starts in earnest.

One last comment. At times like these friends are a very, very good thing. Because, you are not getting out alone. Heck, even if you could move you have no idea which way out is.
 
I stand corrected on the contents of the air pack. I know oxygen is combustible but the firefighter was permanently injured and died as the result of the roof collapsing on him. His fellow firefighters got to him as fast as possible but the damage was done

Where I live there have been problems with the wonderful "refugee" population that we are being burdened with. I am sure some of the thefts of metal are their work as well as the druggies looking for fix money. With the no bail laws there is no fear of punishment
 
About 15 years ago when I worked at Amerimax Building Products. They started selling standing seam roof panels. It was a pretty neat system. You'd place one panel down and lay another beside it. Then you would take a "U" shaped channel that locked down on the two standing seams. You would then install by shooting screws down in the valley of the "U" channel. To finish off the seam, they had another "U" shaped channel that pushed down and locked onto the first "U" shaped channel to make it water proof. I watched them install one of those roofs on our maintenance building. It was fast and pretty neat.

In other words, the first "U" channel went down with the "U" at the bottom and the second locking channel went down with the "U" on top. There is no way that thing could leak. By the way, that last locking channel really locked down hard. Once installed you couldn't get it off without destroying the locking channel. It wasn't going to blow off in any windstorm.

They will wish they were back home if they steal / vandalize from the wrong persons house.
