Lost, Found, & Stolen Guns

stolen in a home invasion in apr 2019, suffolk va. usa.
2 teen thugs were caught, but the guns are long gone, and they wouldnt talk.
one showed up in court, the other fled and is a fugitive.
please contact me or the suffolk, va police dept if you find any of these guns.
its a long shot, but i believe in miracles.

This is important: You must have the serial number known of the firearm you want to be listed as stolen. The federal data base NCIC needs that to enter a firearm as stolen. All police anywhere in US will use that site and maybe local police data bases to check a found firearm.
Good news the NCIC keeps that information until a police department sends them a recovery report.
Bad news police find guns at crime scenes and on crooks daily that are likely stolen but not listed in a data base because victims never gave the police the serial number.
What about firearms made without serial numbers? Yep there are thousands upon thousands that were made without a number. You must put a serial number on it. You can use any number you want. Hidden away only you know where on the gun. A state issued ID number like your Driver's license works.

And then you have our police department who pulled this stunt.

The other had its “Patent No.” Put in the s/n field. SMH

i checked my serial numbers on the local pd report. mines good to go.

The ncic entry is updated every so often and your pd has to verify it needs to stay in. Reasons for removing the entry might be old report, unable to locate the theft report, complainant address isn't current etc. I was unable to locate a lot of old reports or the victims so the 3 depts I worked at and our counterparts in the Sheriffs office deleted most of these from ncic after about 10 years. Also people seldom end up being contacted to get their gun back. PDs usually seize them from the pawn shop etc as evidence and can't make a case against a thief because the gun appears to have gone through several private hands. So it sits awaiting further investigation. After years of sitting they get auctioned off. If it's not solved in a few years and the thief quickly and easily prosecuted you're probably not getting it back. Only way you are getting it back is to keep making sure the guy at the PD is told yearly to keep it current in ncic.
Unless the feds changed their rules, NCIC always has firearms listed for lookup. As I know no other listed items such as vehicles stays active. Feds will send PDs/SOs etc a request to know if stuff is still stolen. My oldest stolen gun return was 22 years, found by dispatch making the stolen firearms check by serial number.
Bobski made a great statement, check after a few weeks or so for a lookup as listed. And do it every year or so after if you want the gun (s) returned.

True, they might stay in forever but the request keeps getting sent to verify. I personally kicked records out in a small town because the reporting party was long dead or the theft report didn't exist when I took over and paper records could not be found etc. I also did not input records where criminal charges were not likely like when your ex wife took the gun. When ncic requests you verify all the stolen guns you have in the system you're verifying you still have a victim and a crime report. If you're checking on a stolen gun hit and the pawn detail says yes Joe Blow reported this stolen in 1991 and we have his landline and apt number which has not been updated since then and we have nothing showing where he moved to our dept would delete the ncic report and let the pawn shop keep it. They would normally have purged the record earlier if the guy hadn't kept us apprised of his current info. So yes it all depends on the dept policies and how they maintain ncic records.
All that info is fine BUT IT DEPENDS ON THE POLICE DEPT. My son and I had 27 firearms stolen from his Phoenix home, we called the police, the sheriff showed up, we gave him ALL THE SERIAL NUMBERS OF THE MISC FIREARMS, he had no idea what to do. A week later we found out a guy was selling a large amount of firearms from his HOUSE in a neighboring suburb, called sheriff's office, they asked if we had purchased any of the guns back to show proof, we said no, they said no proof no further investigation to be done, THEY HAD THE SERIAL NUMBERS TO CHECK IF ANAY OF THEIR OFFICERS WOULD HAVE STOPPED BY THE SAME HOUSE
AND the person that constructed the NEW GUN ROOM IN THE HOUSE WAS THE SAME GUY SELLING THE ARMS!
