"Staples" Rant

This morning I'm sending out a 40 year old riflescope to Leupold for an inspection. First I stopped for a haircut, and decided to mail it from the Staples store next door. After entering the address on her computer, the very snippy manager told me that I had an invalid address. I said I took the address from Leupold's website, and she said if she sent it there, it would just come back. I said, "That is their address, there is no other address". I am slow to anger in the extreme, but this lady was starting to push my buttons. Then she gave me a price of $70.55 to ship it :shock: ! I asked her to repeat that price, then looked her in the eye and asked, "Are you insane? I'll be taking this to the post office."
The post office charged me $15 including insurance.
How on Earth can Staples justify that? :evil: I've mailed longarms through UPS in big hard plastic cases 4' long for half that amount!

Guess what. She gave you a hard time because of Staples shipping policy. A rifle scope in her mind is a firearm part, hence prohibited. You're probably lucky she didn't call the cops on you. :roll:

Here are some other items you can’t ship:

Biologic and/or hazardous materials
Firearms, weapons and their parts
Flammable or explosive products and chemicals
Gambling materials, including lottery tickets
Live animals or insects, or animal carcasses

Unless someone stated that it was a gun part, why would they know. You are not sending a gun part, it is a scope. It is just optics. I doubt the average Staples employee is familiar with Leupold unless they are interested in optics. Many people know the big name camera companies, most don't know brands like Burris, Bushnell, etc.
I have had shipping price shock before. I once needed a forgotten pelican case sent overnight. It was priced over $120 for shipping. I ordered a new case from Amazon for next day delivery for $40 less.

I ran into that same BS at a UPS store about three months ago. Bought a good deal on an NIB Minos scope for about half priced. Warrantee papers had not been mailed in which was good because if I understand it correctly Minox doesn't transfer their warranty like Leupold does. No matter. Went to the UPS store that was run by two women that were of Middle Eastern origin by their looks and they said it was a firearm and couldn't wrap or ship it. I said it was scope, not a gun so one says she'll call the main office. Comes back as says the cannot handle the wrapping or shipping. I ask to speak to whomever she talked to as I felt she was lying. Thing went drastically down hill from there. Finally the one who supposedly called the main office says to the other girl someone in which definitely sounded like Arabic. I decided to exit with a comment that frankly I'm not proud of where several male customers decide to try and throw me out. :shock: I just said I'm leaving so save your breath. I later went to FedEx and shipping the scope with no problem. BTW, my local Fedex will not ship firearms.
When I got home I called the UPS hub here in Tucson about what went down and the guy said he gets all calls, so one, the hag never called and yes they do ship scopes. Firearms may be shipped but only from the hub. I did file a complaint and seriously hope they lose their franchise.
FWIW, Minox's customer service was great. Got the scope back in about two weeks fixed.

Jersey. In New Jersey now, if you show someone a picture of an optic for a gun at a store and ask them to mail or ship it, I'm pretty sure you'll get the same treatment. Believe me if you had made 100 photocopies of the scope and asked them to ship the printed sheets in a box you'd have gotten the same treatment. You're lucky they didn't call the police on you and have you escorted to the local hoosegow for observation.

Staples in NJ and a few other states probably tells all its employees (particularly managers) to report anything they see that's related to firearms and delay, subvert, and/or overprice the order so the person leaves the store, at their weekly Management Meeting. They don't want your kind, they're probably super risk-averse, and they can do basically whatever they choose, particularly if it's supported by higher management (who don't have to report that at all.) If you'd have argued more or made a scene, you'd probably be in jail. The next step was to call the Police about a "Belligerent and possibly violent customer with firearm-related items who won't accept our prices." Six cars two State cruisers and a SWAT team show up and you've just made WPIX.

Staples doesn't have to *justify* anything to you and probably every store manager in Jersey and similar states has been told: "No firearms or firearm related products." They can refuse service to anyone, or make it as difficult and expensive as they wish, never report it as official policy, and that's that. They're a private company and you don't even have the right to be in the building, much less demand an explanation or a "justification."

You should have said: "This riflescope is for my gay friend Leupold for his wedding." And put a big pink ribbon on it. Then you might have had more luck.

Can get most everything they have 2-3 other places for far less

The local UPS "drop off points" charge 10% fee for putting the label on your package. I used UPS because that's what the recipient asked for. Cost me 20% over USPS for same level service.

If ppl boycotted every business that had any policy or semblance of something "anti" those ppl would have VERY few places they could go. As usual, nobody cares until they experience it and then it's WHOA! Heck, I bet there'd be quite a few folks that wave those boycott flags that would have to change jobs. :lol:
