Everything requiring being stored and performed electronically is driving me mad. Want to order a pizza? Go online, they don't answer the phone. Then they ask for everything but your SS number and first born's name. Give a suggestion? They need your life history to comment, and on and on....

I do everything I can to keep my data secure without going absolutely crazy on lock down.

But I have to ask myself why? Every other day you hear of this data breach or that one. Anybody you deal with stores your data and then when their security fails you are the one on the hook. At one time if your data was stolen, it was your fault. Now it's your doctor, your mechanic, your insurance, your bank, the dept store, it could be anybody. And it's not like the old days where it may be just from one small easily fixed source, now a tiny leak is always tied to a huge system that makes it a big concern.

How do we get out from under this continual forced security breach?

I dunno. But for most things I don't care. For the truly important stuff, my data is not provided.

My pizza place has our order in the database. Go online, order it, get an order number, go there is 22 minutes, no problem.

My hair place has me also. They know my barber...all I need to do is pick an available time.

MY CC numbers are never saved. I use them when I get there.

All my insurance policies are online and they send me an email when the next payment is due.

Any data breach will only show my name and email address. Important data is never stored, but only provided once.

Yada Yada. Never a problem. Life is much simpler now.

My dad had his credit card information stolen at least twice by his favorite pizza place.
His important financial and medical and insurance places never gave him grief.

I refuse to use any of these "modern apps, online ordering of food etc" If I go into a restaurant,,, and they have a machine there to be used to place an order,, I do not use them. I wait until I get an actual cashier.
Pizza,, well,, I know cold pizza is just fine,, but when I want one, I want it fresh & hot. Where I live,, there isn't a good place close enough to do the take out thing. We do have (2) places where the pizzas & such are very good & tasty. But since we have to "go out" to get it,, why not sit down & eat it.

But the data thing.

I just refuse to do business with places that don't offer in person service.

I actually like the way I can order pizza these days. But I did find a true Italian place here that you order from them in person.

But I get what you’re saying. I don’t know what the answer is.

Has there been a large security breach involving a bank? Usually it’s some department store or Home Depot. And then when they have a data set stolen, they will provide one year of free credit monitoring. If they still do that anymore.

I read on the news that a large amount of data was stolen. They said it involved 16 billion account names and passwords.

Your credit card numbers are never saved by you. But they are still in the company’s computer database.

Important data is never stored by you. But can you say the same about the company you provided the info too?

All the junk mail and spam phone calls and snap emails come from all of our data being either stolen or sold. There is no other way.

The focus here seems to be on the simple places like food, yes, I don't participate in those. As close as I get is to order as a guest and pay at the counter.

My point was more towards other areas. I have received notices twice in the last six months from medical/hospital organizations. There have been others in the past couple years. That is more to my point. Huge companies get hacked and thousands, (millions?) of people data gets out there. This was never an issue in the past. Now you have to watch everything and they make it near impossible to avoid.

My mother in law had a doctor that demanded a credit card on file. We fought that one hard and stuck to the line "she doesn't have a credit card." They finally caved, but they were very adamant about it. I have had a doctor request to keep CC info which I declined, but you can see it is everywhere for the sake of conveinience.

I have had companies keep my CC data without my permission and have noticed many now have a check box for you to decline them keeping it, but the default is to keep it and it's up to you to catch that little bit of trickery.

The first Data breach involving credit cards that a quick search gave me is 1984 and it involved 90,000,000 people. This isn't a new issue.
