Has anyone replaced the ugly green front sight on the 4.2 in. SP101? Who might make a replacement? Ruger?

I made this one for mine. Still not exactly what I thought it would be. I will probably make another with a flatter more vertical rear face so it wont reflect light as much and appear blacker than this one. I sand blasted it to make it non reflective but it still could be better. Maybe I will serrate it with a checkering file.
I agree, too. It is so much better looking than the fiber optic. I wonder if the dovetail would take an existing front sight from Brownell's, etc. that could be patridge, McGivern, tritium, etc., perhaps one made for an autopistol?

The dovetail is quite shallow in the barrel. I doubt if any standard sight would fit.
I made the one in the photo on my milling machine and it was very time consuming.
I first had to make a little fixture to hold the dovetailed blank so I could finish shape it.
It would be a cinch to make on a CNC mill after the program was written and holding fixtures were made. Us poor boys don`t have equipment like that.

Au contraire! I like the "ugly" green sight so much that I switched over my GP to the same thing from HiVis! For me, function trumps appearances.
I hand fitted a Smith and Wesson gold bead front sight to one of my .327 Federal molels and I really liked it. After I drilled it, I had the height wrong. Everything needs to be tight and flush with all surfaces. I had a second one just in case, but they have been close to 60 bucks. From what I learned, the next one should be correct.
I also like plain black, but prefer a steeper "improved" ramp....less reflected glare back at you.
I have no use for the light tubes for precision shooting....red or orange inserts either.
I have an OM six and a half inch .41 that has an aperture rear and a tittie pink ramp front sight. The action is superb and I think Magnaport did the front sight and the work. The sight picture is fast and useful in the woods for deer.
Bowen has vertical white bars that should center well, but I havent tried a sight with that.
My autoloader Springfield HDs have three white dots that cannot be beat. White reflects all available light, not just one color. I am an optometrist, and advanced gun tinkerer.

Barrel's front sight base on my 4.2-inch 357 Magnum SP101 is significantly deeper than the half-lug revolver shown above. What I do not know is whether its light-gathering green front sight has a different dovetail configuration from that shown. Considering the rising popularity of SP101s in sales of double action revolvers, you may be able to find what you seek in Hamilton Bowen's sights or several other gunsmith/makers of specialty parts.
My personal preference is for a [S&W-type] Baughman quick-draw ramp front with an inlay of epoxy mixed with white or green luminescent powder distilled from watchmaker's dial repair wax. Many years ago when my hands allowed the work, I created several front sights like what I describe for friends who were uniformed patrol in two municipalities in the midwest. They would expose the front sight to light at the beginning of a shift. Light from the inlay was available for a first shot for the entire shift. After shot number one, though, the flash obscured their sights (based on two shooting incidents at night).

Any decent gunsmith should be able either to make a sight in the desired configuration or adapt an existing sight of the correct height. It may be possible to make the cut in the barrel deeper/wider to fit whatever sight they may use, also.
