Last night my youngest daughter Katie called me from the emergency room in Lawrence Kansas because my grandson Indigo broke his right arm. Probably just wrecked all his summer travel plans including coming out here if he has to get it operated on, we will see when he sees the orthopedic Monday. Last two days of school are this week, he will get to spend the summer with a stinky cast in hot weather.
One of his jobs was to be sure the chickens are put up for the night, he was at the emergency room, chickens did not get locked up, raccoons got the chickens in the night.
My other daughter Cassi said this morning that baby Iris was up screaming from 3:30am due to teething.
Then first thing this morning when she got to work, her husband's psycho ex wife called to tell her that the 14yr old step daughter (belligerent difficult teenager) has head lice (major teenage girl freakout ensued) And daughter had to let me go so she could call her husband to go get lice medicine for the whole family and she was not really planning on doing a household deep clean this weekend but now that was job#1 wrecking her plans for some mom fun she had planned with a girlfriend.

I think Cassi had head lice when she was about 7 from school, She had really long hair and ended up getting it cut short to get rid of the lice. My youngest daughter Katie broke her right arm on New Years eve when she was about 8 as we were leaving to go to a formal dinner party, Julie and I were the two best dressed people in the ER that night getting the kid's arm fixed.

I feel your pain. 3 kids and many trauma's over the years. Oldest daughter lived in Texas for about 4 years and every time she had a argument with her boyfriend she called home: always 2 - 3am. Lots of lost sleep. When she lived an hour away always got calls when her car broke down (boyfriend was worthless and wouldn't help),

Middle daughter moved to Long Island for college - got plenty of calls when 'life' wasn't going her way. She still calls at 11pm when she gets home from work just to talk. We go to bed by 10 for early jobs.

Son still lives at home but we can't wait for his drama.

No broken bones but we did the head lice when oldest was young. Got it from neighbor girl and they denied it; even though their daughter was sent home multiple times for lice. We just banned her from our home and said no more playing together. We de-liced our home several times.

No such thing as mom or dad fun when you have kids.

Sad the fellow broke his arm, but it proves the old saying, "Grandkids are your parents revenge".

Every generation of parents has to deal with the same things. Kids get hurt, they get lice, heck, they throw temper tantrums. Sorta been that way since Cain and Able. As long as they don't take it as far as they did count yourself lucky.

I hear you Don . . . . .

My daughter is acting like she suddenly went back into Jr. High.
HER daughter put something on the remote keyboard of daughter's
laptop, and it has gone bonkers. I told her to unplug it, unplug the battery,
let it sit for two or three minutes and hook it back up. Call me if you need
to.

She is about five E-mails past that and still in screaming fits. She is afraid
that she will lose several contracts she has for her business. I asked
when she last backed it up and she said that was not the problem.
(I'll save you further details, because, like I said, she is in Jr High again)

I looked up a replacement computer for hers and it is less than a thousand
dollars. If you run a business on it, WHY don't you have a full backup
(duplicate)?

It must be something in the air.

:D

My oldest daughter + Husband are deeply involved in church and church camp. Son moved out of his mothers with a girl. NOW has a job , payments, better acting, better dressed, you get the picture. She's after his A** all the time. Life is good boys. I know it could be a whole lot worse. Now they can really see the whole picture when I was married to their mother.....

Well be thankful that these kids reach out for help or consolations or just a ear. It is a lot of drama and energy. It is all a part of growing up one way or another. We all can grumble, believe me, I have four of them. But just when I think, now what? I see someone else with something much worse. My wife came home from work yesterday to tell me that a co-worker's daughter had been found in the river downstream from her presumed suicide jump. I know that we all can think of those types of situations.
But I have seen one of my kids stop breathing not once but twice in her childhood. Both times she survived only because she was in an ICU already. Third ICU stay, we were told to prepare for her death. She beat that one too. Child two, wrecked two cars, not injured fortunately and went through four colleges and eight years before graduating with honors. Number three, gave up a full ride plus money scholorship to go to a different school, only to change his mind one semester later. Guess what? They don't hold your financial aid. Oh, minor car accident too. Number four, so far has turned down several full ride scholorship offers.
Plus the normal parenting stuff. Countless fevers, more vomit than seems possible, chicken pox, broken bones, broken hearts, etc.
My friend says this is God's way of aging parents.
I wouldn't trade it for anything. (Although I have been known to put up a "children for sale" sign on the back door after one rough day.)

Being there and doing that Don. Yes sir, being a parent is a life time sentence we get the privilege of serving. Sleeping with the cell phone next to the bed when the first daughter goes off to college or waiting up for them to come home from their senior prom. My worse was 3 years ago as I was getting ready to leave camp the next morning for a pack trip into the Hells Canyon Wilderness when suddenly at 9:00 at night a rig with a spot light comes into the primitive camp we have, shines it on my truck and says he is looking for the owner. My heart hit my throat since I had one of my kids in Afghanistan flying. Luckily the next words out of the deputies mouth was "Don't worry, no one is hurt. There has just been a fire at home and some trucks burned up! Parenthood means you feel like you just got good news instead of what you dreaded.

Both of my daughters are in their forties now so there isn't all that much sturm und drang coming from them now. They both have good husbands and each has presented us with grandkids. Live is good, even with my bad knees, diabetes and prostate problems.

Some of us could debate that with you Robb...

Some parents must have missed that chapter in the book of life..

I've got 3 kids(29-38) and a 50 year old "pseudo-son"(we raised one of my cousins until he graduated high school). The older boys (38 & 50) call me virtually every day with something or just to talk. I do get frustrated with some of the "kids'" choices/decisions but they're good through and through and I feel honored that I'm the person they call for advice.

I have 5 kids so I feel your pain, be thankful they're not calling from jail!

Youngest daughter called me to bail her out of jail in Wisconsin one Sunday morning at 6am when she was 17.

Honestly - Kids these days... I never asked for bailouts when I was her age! ;)

Best regards, Pette
