This afternoon my wife and I took a drive through our local Amish community looking for some fresh vegetables. We stopped at one farm to buy an I had the privilege of watching a young Amish man back an iron wheeled wagon some 35-40 feet with a team of horses. It was quite obviously not the first time he had done this. I have a heck of a time backing a trailer an I can't imagine how difficult it would be with a team of draft horses. Anyway, when I complimented him on his driving skills, he just grinned and said thank you.

I have a heck of a time backing a trailer an I can't imagine how difficult it would be with a team of draft horses.

We used to spend afternoons at the ramp watching people try to launch/retrieve their boats - a great show. I've had open & enclosed car trailers for the last 20 years but never really bothered with learning to backup with any skill since I could always drive push a car to load it. We bought a travel trailer last year and it's forced me to hone my backing so I don't look like a complete idiot at the camp sites. I also cheat since I mounted a backup camera on the back of the trailer.

I too use to always be amused watching 4 or five guys :
A. Trying to back a boat trailer down the ramp (made you wonder how they got the boat into the water in the first place)
B. Trying to line the boat up to haul it up on the trailer.

At the time, I had a 14 ft runabout I would launch and load all by myself. I could back the trailer down to launch and load and had no problem getting it loaded back up.
Those guys would be trying to load their boat when I tied up at the dock, STILL trying when I got back with my trailer, and I would be almost finished hosing my boat down at the wash rack when they finally pulled up.

My job took me to Decatur, Illinois in the summer of 1976 for a several months. While there Nita and I went to Arthur, Ill. where there is a large Amish settlement. It is interesting to me watch old skills being still put to use. There are several of that ilk, Amish, Mennonite, and Quaker, all who practice the old ways to some extent or another. It's not just old ways, but old values.

Don't be envious of the Amish. Research child rape & incest among the Amish - they condone it. Not to mention animal cruelty.

LOL! I've been on both sides. I've been the guy chuckling at all the other people at the boat launch. I've also been "that guy" who couldn't back up a trailer straight if his life depended on it!
