I found a S&W 357 mag. that has REG stamped inside the frame. I can get the gun for around $450.00 but I don't know much about it. I did notice a King name on the front sight?

Is there a # after the REG.? You could be the luckiest person in the world if it's a Registered Magnum and the price is $450. It was the 1st .357 mag. and later became the Model 27. Put your mouse over the image between the gun pics to see what a Registered Magnum marking looks like.

Made from 1935 to 1939. Each RM had a certificate of authenticity, and almost every one was ordered by and sold to a named individual.

You got a good deal I think. More research is required, I hope it is a real RM, and not a fake. You either got a good deal, or the deal of the century.

I stand corrected. I was technically correct in that it wasn't a common barrel length in older Smiths. pruger45 is correct in that it didn't apply to the RM's that ran from 3 1/2" to 8 3/4"pruger45 said:

Yes, a picture would be awesome, and there are enough of us here, on THIS forum, that know quite a bit about S&W, I having been an active member for many years and did help Jim and Rich write Volume 3 of their 'standard catalog ( yep that was ME in the box section......ahem 8) :roll: :wink: Some of us collected and were into LOTS of other makes and models ,long before Rugers .......and MOST makes were done LONG before Rugers were even made............ :roll:
Must remember there was another "registered magnum" issue in 1985 the 50th anniversary model 27 5 inch and they used the REG and digits in their serial number....saw one sell this past weekend at Medina for around $850........
and last weekend at the NE S&W Bunch over in north Olmsted ,Ohio, there was a 3 digit ORIGINAL "registered magnum" in the REG29x range sold for $4500.....ssooooo , is it apples or oranges, PICTURES would help 8)
if its REAL< and the old original version, you hit a 'homerun' :shock
(goes to show, they are still out there boys and girls..... :)
