Well it will lighten the barrel a bit, but personally I just like the way they look, and I think that is the main reason for them. It's the same as fluting, although it has some advantages in weight reduction, it also looks nice. I have a mkIII competition with the slabside and I think it's a really pretty gun. My gun store actually had the fluted hunter in stock but I had them order the competition because I liked it that much better.

Come January, if there is no P4MKIII RP, I'll probably get the 4.5 inch slab.

There is one:

There is already a 4" slabside RP model available. Go to Davidson's and search for Ruger and 22/45. Don't forget to post pics when you get it. ;)

Why a Slab Sided Barrel ??? on the 22/45 of course.

Round bar-stock barrels look unfinished. The flat sides not only look better, but move the bilboard off the sides. The flat sides beg for etching or engraving, but just not Ruger's lawyerspeak.

Don't know the Ruger answer as to why slab sides, except they know a nitch market. If we didn't buy 'em, they won't make 'em.

IMHO the advantage/s that I have seen when shooting the Weaver
stance. I rest the tip of my left forefinger on the beginning of the
curve. The appearance is "cool" and I agree with others that post,
if it looks cool one tends to shoot cool. Why do we look for good wood,
nice finish, engraving (perhaps), if it isn't to make us feel good and thereby
shoot good? My two and half cents - WES

Its reason for being is to be sold to people who want one. It really is just that simple.

Well then, I want a 4 inch bull barrel RP, and a Wooden stocked Mini 6.8 with a 20 round mag. When will they begin making this for me ???? :x
When you can convince someone with some juice in their marketing department that they'll sell a few thousand of them. Or contract to buy a few thousand yourself, like some of the big jobbers/wholesalers do.
