I RECENTLY BOUGHT A RUGER MARK III TARGET PISTOL W/ADJUSTABLE REAR SIGHTS, MY FIRST.
I TOOK IT TO THE RANGE AND WASN'T SURE WHERE TO BEGIN.
I WANTED TO KNOW, AT WHAT DISTANCE FROM THE TARGET SHOULD I TRY AND SET MY SIGHTS AT...
5 YARDS AWAY, 10 YARDS AWAY, 15 YARDS AWAY, 20 YARDS AWAY ETC.
I'M NEW AT THIS SO I REALLY DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS A STANDARD DISTANCE TO SET THESE AT...IF THEY EVEN NEED IT AT ALL.
THANK YOU

Welcome to the Forum, and congrats on your new Ruger! :P

You can set your sights up any way you like. I usually set mine up to be "on" at 25 yards.

If you prefer to shoot shorter distances, or longer, you can set your sights to hit at any reasonable range- it's strictly personal preference.

I'd start close in, and get comfortable shooting groups. As your groups improve, move the targets out farther. I'd probably leave the sights alone, until you are shooting decent groups and know the sights needto be moved...

Good luck!

Uncle Howie is right...

To start with I'd chose the middle ground of either 10 or 15 yards and see. The first thing you need to do before messing with the rear sight is get a clear picture of how the pistol groups with a specific ammo...

I'd work at getting something like quarter size groups at say 15 yards while letting the pistol rest on a range bag or such... doesn't matter if you are hitting the bulls eye or not as long as you are on the paper... once you know what the pistol can do and where it is hitting then you start adjusting.

When I first started pistol shooting I started at 5yds. When I got the groups I wanted I moved to 10 yds. Then kept progressing outwards until I was satisfied with my shooting at the distance at wanted. Now I shoot groups at 25yds and plink at at 50yds.

All good advice above. There is no "standard" as each person has different requirements for what they are doing.
If you zero it close,, and later decide to change it,, it's usually just a minor elevation change.

Having competed at '50 feet indoor ranges I set my sights to that range but if you want to, start at a shorter range and 'work' to a greater distance. I would suggest that you start by shooting from a sand bag or some other 'stationary' rest so you eliminate the breathing and heart beat movement that offhand will produce.

When I started shooting guns as a boy with my uncle, a WWII vet, he had me shooting a country mile at targets. As you can probably figure out, I wasn't hitting very much! With his tutorial, I started hitting things pretty good. His idea all along was to get me ready to shoot deer at 100 yards or more. Smart thinking on his part. I became a very good shot at multiple ranges!.......................Dick

As for sighting in, you want to sight it in at the distance you are going to be shooting... no sense sighting it in at 25 yards if you are going to be shooting at 10-15 yards, right? I keep my rimfire pistols sighted in at 10 yards, because thats about what i shoot them at....
