Sighting in new scope

Broke down and bought a Simmons 3-9x scope for my Win 9422m a couple weeks back since my 71 yo eyeballs ain't what they used to be. Here's the sighting in progression:

Got it rough sighted in last weekend @about 30yds with Fiocchi 40grn FMJ. Had some issue with my home made rest (wobbly), and trying to find a scope distance from my eye. I need to shim the butt stock an inch or so move the scope forward enough to get a decent cheek weld. Trigger felt a little stiff also, so I'll have to look at that. Probably just needs lube.

Took care of the trigger & rest issues & got out this morning to do a little more bangin' with the 9422m. A little gusty wind swirling around this morning, but not a big deal. Loaded with Hornady Critical Defense, .22wmr, 45grn. What a difference ammo makes!! Same distance, with the rest as the first round with the Fiocchi 40 grn FMJ. Did not make any changes in the scope for the first 3 shots with the Hornady, and you can see they hit a pretty good group, but way low and right. Made adjustments to bring it up and left for the next 6.

Some of the group spread is because of my eyeball. I really need to get a patch for my left eye, it's hard to just close it without screwing up the right eye focus/sight picture after a few shots. :roll:

Put up a new target to verify.

Next time out, I'll see what happens with Hornady 3ogrn V-Max at longer ranges.

Looks like the firearm is capable producing groups.
Whenever possible I use an extra person for sighting in.
One shoots for 3 shot groups, when an acceptable group happens I hold the scope at the POA and have my buddy adjust the adjustments to the center of the group.
I understand age and eyesight issues. An extremely stable rest, same trigger pull and being able to see clearly are very important when sighting in.
I have sighted in many of rifle for friends in the past. I ignore first shot and look for very small groups. As a 40 year reloader, groups are my thing. Pert near any rifle can become a jewel with the ammo it likes.
Not all ammo is created equal.

Got a custom built 25/06, bought 2nd handed that took me 18 months to reload for the best groups. True deer killer at 400 yards.

Ok, the continuing saga of sighting in my Win 9422M.

This morning I repositioned the scope rings to get a better eye relief. Success there, much better.

So out to the backyard to sight in with Hornady V-Max 30grn. Shot a couple inches higher than with the 45 grn Critical Duty as I expected, so dialed that down and right for the next couple shots. Then down a few more clicks for shots 4-10. #10 was me screwing up. Anyway, I cranked on a couple more clicks right windage for tomorrow or the next day depending on the weather, based on the 5-9 group.

I will say the V-Max makes an excellent group if I do my part. :wink:

67 years old, closing the non-shooting eye comes automatically to me, one of the keys is to just close it, not squint or grimace.

I'm 71, been shooting for 60 years and never had a problem with this until now. Everyone ages differently.
