sell timing?

When the right person looks at them. :wink: You can never tell, as I have gone to gun shows and never sell a thing and the next time I go they fly off the table. You just never know. Just put them on line and see what happens. Good luck with your sales.
I second the idea to try the classifieds here first. It doesn't cost anything and as far as I can tell, people are completely honest. I have no worries about buying or selling here at all.

Karl, collecting is not really considered "seasonal" except in the case of after income tax returns, if there are any, some folks may have a bit more discretional (sic) cash for spending...........other wise seasonal would be more in line for hunting guns, big game in the late summer or fall, and varmint in the springtime, I know in some areas there is spring hunts, and other things going on, same goes for plannignga "big hunt" but in your case , MK IIs are NOT used for hunting, maybe varmint, but more in line with plinking and target shooting for the USERS ( shooters) and again collectors don;t want them "used", they are looking for pristine, new in box or rare ,scarce variations, NOT seasonal................... as noted above, I certainly would try a "free" source like here on the Forum, or hit one of the Ruger "theme" shows, like 'ROCS' and the RCA used to put on, see what the interest may be, then as a last resort, try and auction site but for the MOST part over the years, I have seen far MORE folks NOT make much money , in some cases "lose" what they even have in them, and then there are all the "fees", sales commissions, both for buyer as well as seller, and transfers and on and on, and what if you do NOT get at least TWO people who may want what you have and bid against each other, drive up the total sale, etc..................I am NOT a fan of auctions, but at least that affords a chance for others across the country so "see" what you have but that can be a "sales" site as well, and NOT an auction per se...............
We've been fortunate over the years , here in Ohio we have numerosu gun shows of all sizes as well as small , medium and BIG time for true collectibles ( the Ohio Gun Collectors) I used to set up there ALL thre time,, never missed a show but in reality , the last few years so called "collectible" Rugers have NOT been moving well, especially common, middle of the road stuff...yes rare, low numbers, one of a kind,, they sell themselves......................good luck, write a book or become "famous" ( or is it "infamous") and your stuff will be like Elmer Keith or some other hot shot, and sell for BIG bucks...............maybe :roll:

.22s are easy to sell when ,22 ammo is available! But please post your mark lls in the classifieds here first, no auction fees, and you will have a better chance of getting what their worth! Good luck, can't wait to see what you have!---bedrockfred

The one thing about any auction site, unless a potential buyer actually knows the value or rarity of something, which I expect to see in this pistol collection collection, the seller will very likely be insulted by some of the offers made by these people on gunbroker.
So be sure to have a minimum on your pistols. The 10" guns, 5-1/4" guns and Great 8's especially, or any other variation that you think might deserve special attention.
Many of the guns I am sure will have some sort of special nuance to you...but 95% of the people looking for guns on the auction sites see them as just another gun, so for some of the pistols you will be happy to gain equity value over the price you paid for them originally.

Place to check is your LGS if you have a good relationship with them. Mine does a high volume of both consignment and new sales.
Stopped in a couple of days ago, and they said new sales were OK about a week ago, but have fallen off, their hot business right now is the consignment guns, which they make a 15% cut off of.
There is excess inventory in the market, with people selling guns they bought during the big panic on the consignment market to get cash back, so it is right now I'd say a buyers market.
If you look at the latest copy of RENE, Chad indicates that distributor and Ruger gun inventories are up considerably (my interpretation @ 100,000 units plus), so that also indicates slow sales and lower prices due to supply and demand.
Now collectible guns are a bit if a different animal, but if the market is up they tend to be up too.
If you do not subscribe to Rene, suggest you contact Chad, as the last issue had the price guide, and prices for MKI, MKII and MKII collectible pistols are listed there. That should give you an idea of what you should get on Gun Broker as an absolute minimum, or preferably is you post them here first.
Good example, listed in the price guide is a KMK514 (MKII) at $475, one recently sold on Gun Broker for $600 on the second attempt, and it was not NIB (Auction # 504469068).
Good place to check past sales is on Gun Broker in the advanced search tab, will give you an indication of population of guns that have been available, how long they were up for sale and prices sold or not sold at.
I buy a lot of guns off Gun Broker, but I know exactly what I want (condition, model, price) and the max I will pay, no buyer remorse that way. Don't get a bunch, but the ones I do win are always good investments.... (based on profits made at subsequent sales)

Jim Luke, I was not meaning gunbroker, I will say it was one here in Ohio, Garner auctions and a man I knew ,Bob Hunt, tried to auction his Rugers there and lost his arse, did NOT get back the money he had in them,,,,,,no reserve, no starting price, he got screwed as hardly NO one was bidding ,let alone buying Rugers.....same held true for the local 'gun runner' auction here in Burton,Oh Bob C.s'son Rob got an old model 45 convertible for less than HALF of market value, and I had my neighbor go and bid/ buy for me, as they know me all too well, and he got an old model 3 digit 30 carbine for $300 including "fees" and transfer and all that.
The only person who made money was the auction house................

A gun will sell its self putting it on the forum could fetch you less than its worth, We know what they are worth and will snatch them up and even re sell them and there is nothing wrong with that.
Put them on G.B. with out a buy now price for a long 10 day or longer auction to give as many as you can a chance to see them, If there is a demand for them the price will go up with the demand . Decide what you want or feel that they are worth and set the minimum accordingly. Post them on recurring and auction items here on the forum for collector advertisement .
Making the decision to sell something that you are passionate about is hard to do good luck to you.
