S&W 625-5 help

Not a Ruger, but does anyone know anything about a s&w 625 classic? 5" barrel and supposedly #1068 out of 1550. The marking on the frame is 625-5. Any help would be appreciated. Est on price ranges, etc?

Model 625 dash numbers don't follow a consistent pattern that I can discern, but in this case I'm sure it is not a Mountain Gun because dlhredfoxx wrote it is a 5" Classic. The various Classic barrel lengths are all full lug heavy barrels with front sights that can be changed with your fingers versus Mountain Guns which all have 4" tapered barrels with plain black front ramp sights.

First, if you decide not to buy that revolver please tell me where it is at. I like a heavy weight .45 Colt because we all wind up loading heavier .45 bullets in .45 Colt and shooting is supposed to be enjoyable. You could say I'm a wimp but I fired more than a few magnums. Anyhow, S&W's 5" .45 Colt 625s are sought after and harder to find than their much more numerous .45 Colt Mountain Guns. Both styles have an excellent reputation for accuracy. One's for belt carry, the other for range duty. Of course it's old news that .45 Colt BHs and RHs are safe with much heavier charges and less expensive to boot.

Around 1980 there were a group of Mexican-American U.S. Border Patrol agents shot bowling pins at Richard Davis's Second Chance match in Michigan. These were tall, beefy fellows and they each shot, as I recall, a Smith & Wesson .45 Colt with 4" barrel. Blue, of course. These guys shot like greased lightening and reloaded with speed loaders smooth as cream. One of 'em said they practiced speed loading in their off time, and always while watching television, dribbling dummy rounds and speed loaders on the floor.

Recall their ammunition as factory, the Peacemaker's traditional Round Nose Flat Point.

The gun is in 95% condition, stainless and chambered in 45 Colt. Any guess on value? A friend of may have an opportunity to buy one from an individual, but is trying to get an idea on fair market value. I'm having a hard time finding actual selling prices for these on GB or GA or anywhere on the internet for that matter.

I have seen one in a local shop somewhat recently for $750 to $800 IIRC. I didn't look at it closely so don't know details on condition, but it was a used gun. Cash deal would have been a bit less.

That's a fantastic looking revolver! (Hope I'm not supposed to say such things about non-Rugers on this forum) I'll be it really makes that metal square swing. I love the stag & grip adaptor combination.
The dash 6s were the first batch of stainless .45 Colt Mountain Guns. There were later batches with MIM parts including dash 7s and 9s.
My favorite Mountain Gun is my 625 .45 ACP. At 36 ounces it is a little lighter than your .45 Colt because its cylinder is shorter on both ends. The more efficient .45 Auto Rim case produces all the recoil that I enjoy in it with 240 grain SWCs. As a minor benefit, it’s nice to have a revolver that fires the auto cartridges you reload for so you don’t have to pull apart the occasional batch of reloads that won’t feed in your auto. I don’t fire it in matches. I have a heavy 625 for that.
The light weight big bore DA revolver is a specialty nitch that I doubt Ruger will ever compete in. S&W sells only enough of them to justify a small batch about every other year. The only cartridge they’ve made them in often enough that you can always find one is .44 magnum.

I didn't answer that before because I've seen ad prices up & down a wide range. It is worth a premium over the price of common used S&W model 629 .44 magnums, 90% of which pass through the local gun stores in the $600 to $700 price range. I've decided that handguns aren't worth more than $800 to me. When they're priced higher than $800 it's time for me to look for a different gun. However, it would not surprise me to see one sell for over $1,000 on one of the national internet auction sites.

I have a 5" 625-5 Classic. I also have a 5" 629-3 that is its near-twin. I bought both in mid-90's for $500 new (625) and $450 used (629).

I have been offered $750 for both in the last two years. Mine are fired (and dirty currently) but not abused.

The 625 in 45 Colt is a bit rarer than some since most of the 625's people run across are 45ACP like the 1989's (great shooters BTW - a buddy has one that drives tacks). If you can get a used one in the 600's or less, jump on that. All the Smiths in this vein (N-frames, blue and SS that are pre-lock) are sky high right now-IMHO :roll: . I bought a 14-3 8" in 95% for $500 last month and was happy - I know it is not an N-frame. I have seen them asking 700-750 for similar guns. A LGS has a 629-4 for $865 :shock: in 95% or so condition.

I really like mine - nice balance with the 5" bbl. but still plenty of weight up front to steady. :mrgreen:

The first 625 Mountain gun was actually the 625-4,Springfield Armory Bicentennial,500 mfd.Really cool guns though.

The 625-5 was manufactured in 1991.Sorry,I can't help you with the price.Nice gun but since it is relegated to shoot standard pressure loads,the .45 ACP may be a bit more practical for many.I don't know if the .45 Colt chambering makes it worth more or less.I used to have one of the 625-5's.Nice but just didn't do what I wanted it to do.

I snagged a 625-5 Mountain Gun today. :mrgreen: I now have it to go with the 5" Classic. I sold my first one 7-8 years ago and have been kicking myself ever since.

Its nice to get back "one that got away". :wink:

The 5" Classic in .45 Colt is a $650-$750 gun all day long.
They are very hard to come by and sought after.
Mine is not for sale.
