Ruger SR556 Question.

Any member own an SR556? I'm considering buying a piston driven rifle. How do you owners like your rifle? Can you shoot the green tip 62 gr ammo thru the rifle without extraction problems? Any other like/dislikes? Thanks BHK :mrgreen:

I own several, and I've had no issues with any ammo I've tried. It's a muzzle-heavy rifle compared to some, but not overly so. The SR-556 CLA is the one to get if you're concerned about that, but they're all good rifles. I say handle one in a shop, and if you like the way it balances then you'll be happy with your purchase.

I have the CLA model and love it. I don't have a DI AR to compare it to.

In theory, a piston-driven rifle does not have the potential accuracy of direct impingement rifle. And in fact, some piston-driven AR types suffer from upper receiver wear because the unmodified bolt carrier they have is forced to tilt slightly with each shot fired. Although I do not know it for a fact, I have heard that Ruger addressed this matter in some fashion with their design. Personally I feel the piston drive is a solution for a problem that doesn't exist, and the significantly higher price is not worth it to me.

Very happy with mine and no ammo problems yet. It is a little heavier than other AR's I have owned but you get used to it. Now Ruger only has the SR556 in a takedown version, the standard version is no longer on their website.

I actually went with the AR-556 and the SR-776. I felt the piston in the larger rifle with the adjustment on it was great for all the 308 rounds it might fire. With the SR-556 I was not sold on the piston buy want to play with the SR-556 Takedown version so may see what that is about.

Yep. Limped along is right. :roll: We (soldiers) hated it. And as an ordnanceman, I know first hand how fragile they can be.

On a shooting range, where abuse could be minimal, I'm sure they are fine.

So for the folks that don't know the differences, don't appreciate the differences, don't need the differences, or can't justify the higher cost, the conventional AR continues to be the most popular choice.

O own a sr 556 I assume it's an e because no rails other than top and it feeds fires and ejected 62 gr American eagles w green tip with no problems and this was done on point 1and 2on the adjustable gas piston. Over 6 mags not one single issue so far.
