Ruger Scout Ejection issues

So, I just picked up a new Ruger Scout, and I'm disappointed to say that it is malfunctioning enough for me to have to send it back to the factory.

About 30% of the shells will fail to eject when I work the bolt. The ejector does not extend all the way into the groove on the bolt, and winds up beneath the case head.

Anyone else have/had similar issues?

This is the third Ruger firearm that I've bought new in a row that had QC problems.

:?

Ruger has had a LOT of QC issues of late. They will make it right, but it takes the fun out of it having to send them back. Are you using nickel brass by chance?

Nope....regular brass cartridges...even tried a box of expensive match ammo to rule out ammo related ejection issues.

You are absolutely right...took the fun out of buying a new rifle.

I suspect that a large proportion of guns are bought and shot minimally....or even not at all, so the poor QC is not big of a problem for the manufacturer.

Just a problem to those of us who like to put rounds through their guns to make sure they work in a pinch.

Depending on the mag used, not enough spring strength will preclude the follower or next round from pushing the spent case into the ejector pathway.

Yes, after decades of building M77 bolt guns you'd expect a basic functioning issue to be worked out & reliability is one selling point of the Scout.

But Ruger is "inspecting quality into" their products these days, instead of "building quality into" them. And even that is failing, as inspectors raising issues are finding themselves in jeopardy...

that's not it...tried several different magazines, including genuine AICS ones from my custom bolt gun.

Never had a Ruger bolt gun but my understanding is the ejector is pushed by a spring so it moves into a slot in the bolt to be positioned to hit the case as the bolt draws it back. Is there a burr or anything else on the ejector or in the slot that keeps the ejector out?

Not that I can identify. The ejector appears to move freely when I inspected it.

What did Ruger say / do to remedy your problem?

I just bought a Scout and am having the same issue. I thought it might be an ammo issue so I picked up a few different brands to see if that helps. Haven't shot the new ammo yet but after reading your post I'm not optimistic.

I've seen this problem before. The ejector is supposed to line up with the groove on the bottom of the bolt, but it sounds like you'r ejector is not entering the groove until the cartridge case has already passed.

Here' how to check and fix:

Put some lipstick on the top edge of the ejector, then cycle the bolt a couple of times. Check the bottom of the bolt for lipstick tracks. If the lipstick shows the ejector is riding on one of the edges instead of in the groove, then use a pair of needle nose pliers to bend the ejector. Repeat until it consistently shows lipstick in the groove instead of on the edge.

P.S. Get your wife's permission to use the lipstick. They get perturbed if you don't.

So, what was the outcome? Did you send it back to Ruger? Did they fix it?

I picked up a scout a couple months ago and am having same problem. Called Ruger and they said try different ammo. Tried it, problem continued. Haven't sent it back yet.
