This is great news. A lot of prospective Mini-14 buyers will turn to it which will lower the price on the Mini-14. 
Well I wouldn't say useless features. The last time I was shooting with someone who had an AR it was a fancy side charger with a non reciprocating handle and no forward assist. For some reason it was having a hard time going the last fraction of an inch in to battery, the only option was to rack out the good round and hope the next one went in fully. At that point I decided that when I did get an AR it would have to have a forward assist.

Love the serrated face on the front sight. Delta ring feature could be nice. Wish it had a mid length gas system with that 16" barrel though.

ha hah--just what the market needs--yet another AR. ; ) From what I can tell the only new thing it brings to the table is the barrel nut--which I suppose has been improved to avoid the standard crush ring for the hand guard--I hate that tool which goes around it and must pivot off the mag well. If Ruger had just spent a tiny bit more and delivered it standard with some kind of free-float rail at a similar price point--then maybe they would capture some notice in what is probably the most competitive market niche in the firearms industry. 1:8 twist standard is pretty cool--hopefully it groups really well.

The Dust Cover is a simple and effective feature.

Respectfully disagree--for non-combat or non critical tactical/defense roles--I believe a smooth side AR is just fine. I don't think this weapon is aimed at special forces or swat teams. These days a "civi-market" AR--better known as a "modern sporting rifle" IMO needs a good trigger group and a good rail to stand out--the ability to group well for paper-punching, hunting or 3 gun competitions is more important than the ability to operate full-auto/ mil-spec.Buckeye Bill said:

Could this finally mean the end of the Mini 14? I mean it's heavier, more expensive, generally less accurate, and doesn't use P mags. My friend, maybe the largest dealer in North Carolina, has around 3,000 guns in stock. None are Minis, and that was before this came out.

If it were a choice, I'd rather have a Ruger made AK than a Mini 30. With the new import sanctions, a US made, major manufacturer, stamped AK could be VERY competitive and a VERY big deal.9x19 said:

I'm tempted to trade in my Sport for one. But the Sport is just way too accurate. Also wish Ruger would have had a Melonite treated barrel; or even a chrome lined one. I like having the dust cover and FA. But neither of them is necessary IMHO. They do look cool though. I really love the quick detach feature on the Ruger. That is much more useful than the sling attachment on the Sport front sight.

The depression in the side of the bolt, that is visible and ACCESSIBLE from the ejection port, works quite well to assist the bolt into battery when needed....

Just my opinion but the FA and the dust cover may not be needed but when you look at the price they are worth it for the insurance. Most of us will not be in an environment that we need the dust cover, but I am so used to it that the rifle looks incomplete without it. When I am trying to chamber a round without a lot of noise I will hit the FA just to be sure the bolt is fully seated.

They call it a flat-top--but it's not really since the front sight post is pinned to the barrel. This gun is going up against the DPMS sportical which is a true flat-top and has a simple gas block pinned to the barrel--with little cost Ruger should have instead used a block with rail and removable sight--making the switch to a free-float rail less complicated. I've owned and used a sportical for years (though it eventually got parted out) and it's simple chrome-moly barrel was capable of sub-MOA with the right ammo at 100. I wish this weapon the best of luck for Ruger--but as this article suggests it's entering a sea awash with dozens of competitors--and there are some very good ones at a similar price point--unless we start seeing this in the sub $500 maybe (I bought my sportical at wally world for $475).

You're probably right. Just thought if a Ruger fan went to purchase a 5.56, he might opt for a $569 (the price on the first to hit "my" store) AR556, instead of a Mini. But each has their devoted followers.

When ya think about it, everbody 'n their dog markets an AR these days. On the other hand, the Mini-14 is a rather unique rifle, and for guy's that like it, Ruger perty-much has the market cornered.
That's perty-much why I don't see the Mini going away......but....
