Ruger 10/22 Scope Base Issue

I was mounting a Leupold STD base on my Ruger 10/22 and when I went to tighten the screws I must have over tightened the middle screw a bit to much as it spins around and will not tighten up like the otehr two. I removed it and tightened it the best I could. Will this be ok or do I need to do something else to it???

All too often, folks overtighten base and ring screws. You should be able to add a filler to the threads to help it tighten SOME. Teflon thread tape, thin fishing line, etc will add some binding in the threads to allow it to tighten some. If you have the other two in ok, they should do ok at holding things on a 22LR. However, you can also go to a gunsmith and have him re-tap the threads to a slightly larger size too.

Welcome Jack, and I sympathize with ya... :x

FWIW, I've used an epoxy called "JB Weld" to fill and then "retap" such disasters...Even in engine blocks and cyl heads or places where I had no in-car option to install a helicoil due to lack of working room. It's pretty good stuff... :wink: (But still a band aid)
It's best in aluminum or cast iron though, steel not so much... :?

I'm reminded of an old mechanic saying..."Tighten until it strips then back off half a turn"... :roll: :lol:

Loc-tite makes a product to 'repair' stripped threads like this. Brownells should carry it.

Screws = steel
Receiver = aluminum

Snug is good but going just that little minute past that can be a big "uh oh". If you feel you must have that last screw, a tiny dot of Locktite is all that's needed.
