Been looking for a SS 5.5" RH in 44mag. in the local shops & w/ FFL's they say they can't get them. Some say it's a production thing, anyone have any insight ?

I see used SS & Blue ones on GB going for over msrp, pretty frustrating.

This has been discussed here before and recently, I think.

If I remember correctly, the general thought is that Ruger produces this gun (and maybe others?) in batches. If so, that's why we see a flood of availability and then lean times.

Not sure that's 100 percent correct ..... others will chime in soon I hope.

I too got the same explanation that Hittman gave while I was at a gun show asking a dealer about that. Ruger basically does not want to keep a lower turnaround part/product in inventory when they can have high turnaround goods.

I too wanted a 5½" Redhawk but after looking for a long time, I saw my Super Redhawk 7½" at the aforementioned gun show. I took it and have enjoyed it ever since I took it home. :)

Two words...Lean manufacturing. ;)

Yup...convince a distributor or two that there's a need and Ruger will make them. This is one of the things that Ruger did actually improve with their manufacturing...is that with their cell manufacturing they can make short runs of something as long as there is demand for it.
Now all you need to do is convince a couple hundred or so more people that they want one.
