I recently bought a used Super Redhawk, 44 mag. The hammer and trigger will randomly lock down, when I open the cylinder it frees up. Has anyone else had this problem, if so, what’s the solution?

The hammer shouldn't be free when the cylinder is open, so I'm assuming that you mean the hammer frees up if you open and close the cylinder. The cylinder crane latch is binding.

There's an extension on the back of the latch button that stops the pawl from rising if the latch button isn't seated fully forward. Lube it generously and cycle the hammer and trigger a bunch, it should smooth up.

Edit for nomenclature and clarification.

My 45 Colt Redhawk has started randomly doing the same thing after about three hundred+/- rounds. Feels like I short stroked the trigger but I know I didn't. It will do it even when I fully remove my finger off the trigger. Haven't had time to do a full disassembly and clean, but I'll do that first and go from there.

Timing problem on a used Super Redhawk? Don't know how many excess top pressure loads have been expended? Completely strip and clean thoroughly, lube and see if the problem persists. If not solved take it to a Smith for complete overhaul. JMHO YMMV.

I had a brand new Redhawk .45 do the same thing, sent it back to Ruger and they replaced the pawl. Frustrating on a new gun, but my revolver did exactly as you describe. My gun was purchased March 5 of this year.

I took mine to a local gunsmith, he thought it was fixed, but it wasn’t. I sent it back to Ruger this morning, hopefully it will come back ready to go.

Just curious....if this was a FTF buy .....when you looked at this used revolver what type of evaluation did you conduct to inspect prior to the decision of purchase? No issues found and then suddenly this?

My Redhawk has close to 300 rounds through it and just has started acting up. I'm hoping a good cleaning sets things right.
