i called ruger cust. service about recoil spring, they said the sr1911 comes with a 18 lb. spring but the part number in the book owners man. as stock is the 16 lb. spring according to cust service,no answer as to what the part number for 18 lb spring is, so if you order a stock spring you get a 16 lb spring!

I slipped a Wolf 16# spring in mine. I like to shoot mild loads for target shooting
and shoot lots of cast bullets in my SR 1911.

chuck did you notice any difference, i couldn't find a listing for sr1911 on wolf, did you use any 1911 spring

The standard 1911 recoil spring is the proper one.

The 16 lb. is the standard one.
Have fun!!

I could believe that is an 18lb spring the gun comes with, although I do not have a spring gauge. I put a 16lb Wolff in mine. Works fine.

The spring that came with mine (May, 2011) checked out at 18+ pounds. I purchased Wolff 14# and 16# just in case because I load for just enough velocity to meet USPSA "power factor" with 200 gr LSWC bullets. The factory spring performed fine, so the Wolff springs are still with the other spare parts in my range bag.

I found it interesting that after more than 7,000 rounds the factory spring still checks out at 17+ pounds. As cheap as springs are, I still see no sense in replacing it. "If it ain't broke..."

Did it not work fine with the factory spring ?

I've left the factory supplied recoil spring in my SR1911 and have had no problems with any loads thus far. My hand loads with 200 gr TWC's chrono at ~750 fps and function perfectly. Winchester white box 230 gr FMJ's chrono at 820 fps as well as Federal 230 gr JHP HRT rounds at 991 fps also function perfectly. While at Front Sight's 4-Day Defensive Handgun Course, I fired 600 rounds in 4 days of intensive training....roughly 300 round each of PMC and Federal 230 gr FMJ's with no issues either. For me, the factory spring does feel heavier than my Colts', but works well. Best Regards, Rod

These springs are devils to put back after tearing down, for old hands that is.. I will leave it alone, ruger put it there for a reason, dont know why people want to change everything, reminds me of when I was modifing my 60 chevy and my dad told me that I knew more than general motors. I found out that I didnt.

So it is generally agreed upon that the stock spring is 18#?

I'm real curious to know why Ruger sells the 16# and not 18# that the gun comes with. Just doesn't make sense to me.

i put through about 400 rounds through my Full size SR 1911 & it worked just fine not one Jam or FTF etc.The Spring that came with the gun new,If it was an 18 Lb. spring worked fine. I have a spare 16 LB. spring around. that if needed I will use it in the Ruger & do not see any problems with the 16 LB. spring, If that is Standard for a 1911 gun.

I've used ammo from 185 SWC lead to 230 FMJ, handloads & factory, with the same recoil spring. never had a problem. I did finally replace the recoil spring on a Colt Series 70 with a new factory spring after 17k + rounds. All that changed was the brass went more to the side than off my right shoulder.

I shoot mostly medium reloads. I replaced my recoil spring with a wolf #14 variable spring. Maybe its in my head, but I think it really shoots nice. The slide is easier to rack and when it cycles it doesn't nose dive.
