Will a Super Blackhawk, or for that matter, a full size Blackhawk hammer drop into a New Vaquero? Are the hammers the same size even though the frame on the New Vaquero is a little smaller? I have a New Vaquero Sheriff and wider spur hammer from a SBH and am thinking about putting it in the Vaquero.

Thanks for your help

Louie

Yes it will pretty much drop in. The second step on the hammer will probably have to be filed deeper since the NV uses the thicker transfer bar.

The next check after you cut the second step deep enough to do away with the transfer bar pinch is to open the loading gate and count the clicks. 6 and you are good to go, 12 clicks and you will have to remove some from the top of the hammer to let it sit deeper when at rest. The 12 clicks are 6 from the pawl, and 6 from the plunger that aligns the chambers with the loading gate. The NV is designed to retract the pawl when the hammer is at rest(freespin pawl basically), so the hammer may need to sit deeper to contact the base of the pawl and retract it. Then you will only have "clicks" from the plunger when the chambers are aligned.

Have had two such done while being tuned. I believe my smith said virtual drop in on one, and minor fitting/filing along lines mentioned above on the other.
You don't say, but if your Sheriff is a stainless, a Montado hammer matching the high polish is the same profile and drops right in as well. Sounds like you've got a bird in the hand though so go for it!

Yep-Right in.....Both for the New & OM Vaquero.
Have done both. The SBH hammer is just like the
Montado hammer which fits right in the NV. Just
the way the spur is checkered is really the only
diff. In fact the Birdshead Talo Edition NV uses
the SBH hammer.

My OM Vaquero Below-SBH dropped right in no problems
and timing, pinch, etc was just fine-No mod was needed.
