The proto Kirst Gated Conversion has been fired, works perfectly. Twenty-four 45C +p rounds . . .

Is there a Gated Kirst Konversion for the Ruger Old Army to be available sometime soon? No hints at the Kirst website.

"+P" out of a conversion cylinder, impressive and most interesting! Given the robust nature of the Kirst conversion kit construction, I had always thought the limitation to reduced "cowboy" loads was underrating the Kirst.

Also interesting is the prominent "corona starburst" at the business end of the cylinder chambers, what projectiles were used?

Don't know when they will be available but I've been after this off and on for years!! Been talking with Walt about it for a couple of years and comparing notes. He's happy, im happy, shouldn't be too long.

The loads were 250gr LRN with 11.5gr Longshot. The throats may be a little generous in this cyl, may need to find some .454's or replace with new production cyl.

Has anybody used hotter loads in the Howell cylinders?

Any problems with operating the Kirst prototype without a loading gate? Careful modifications to a standard Kirst might be a good temporary work around to mimic the prototype. We don't need no stinking loading gates.

My biggest problem with the Howell type cylinder is the support that the rear cap offers. It's not 100%. The full conversion plate that Kirst uses gives 100 % support to back up the cart. case. Not to mention, a "drop cyl" in a ROA is a pain!!😎 The loading lever falls apart, or don't use it but then you have to lock / unlock the stock base pin OR buy an aftermarket pin and locking device!! The "Drop cylinder" setup is why my 5 ROA's stay home on range days!!
That's the main reason for a gated version!! 😮 if I won't use a drop cyl, i know my son and grands won't either!!! Fortunately, that won't be a problem now!!!! 🤠

As far as the loading gate, sure (!!!) you need a gate, otherwise ammo will escape or lock up the revolver but for testing purposes, the gate isn't needed for a proof of concept range trip. The best thing BY FAR was I could load AND unload without removing the cylinder!!!! Very range friendly!!
