Pretty awesome they were recovered. More of an art heist than a weapons theft.

When we visited the Gardner a few years ago it was still unsolved, but apparently the mastermind is known to the police, who cannot prove it.

There was a crew of thieves targeting libraries and small museums in my area many years ago. They stole antique weapons, documents, maps and medals. One medal stolen was the Congressional Medal of Honor. Some of what they stole was recovered but other things have not shown up yet. There are unscrupulous collectors that will buy obviously stolen items and hoard them like a deranged chipmunk... There is no figuring out some people...

I’ve been to the Springfield Armory, it is a National Park now. First floor is awesome. Second floor is absolutely mind blowing.

You have to make special arrangements and pay a fee to get a private tour of the second floor. There are 1,000’s of guns up there. Battlefield pickups from every battle we’ve ever been in.

They would send the guns to Springfield to be analyzed and as a reference if ever needed.

At the time of the theft, the Armory was being run by a nonprofit group. This tells me all of that could have been lost.

I scanned the article and found one sentence kind of strange... but you know how these articles are. So, the person who had all these guns, which the article did not disclose how he got them... something about originally his mother having them and there was a dispute about ownership between him and his brother... but here is the part I don't understand: "Part of the plea agreement, Gross said, called for Corbett to recover items he didn't have."

I think that one will remain a mystery to me for a long time........

He was an antique dealer. I’m thinking he knew where the rest were based on his business contacts.

But I also wonder if he inherited the mess from his father. Maybe his father was the thief.

I got the impression he was still in his mothers house, the brother was trying to get his fair share of the contents of the house and said something in court that tipped them off.

Might make a good movie someday. At least it has a happy ending.

I just heard on our local news that one of the weapons recovered was from the Jefferson Davis Home "Beauvoir" here on the South Coast of Mississippi. It was on loan to the museum but was stolen decades ago. They hope to have it back soon.
