People are sure sensitive about little things, or maybe I'm just a curmudgeon

I'll admit to being a Facebook user, mostly to see photos of the grandkids, and to irritate Leftists, but sometimes I still get surprised with how sensitive some people can be. Someone (not anyone that I know) started a comment thread about favorite movies that you have watched numerous times. Granted that this thread was not looking for critical comments, just personal favorites, but I couldn't help commenting when some male (I assume from the name) said that his favorite movie, which he has watched many, many times, is "The Sound of Music". I merely stated that this movie makes me nauseous with its sweetness and that as a movie, it sure doesn't hold up well. I said that some of the songs were good, and that I enjoyed the movie when I was younger, but I'm grown up now. You would not believe the torrent of angry, almost hysterical comments followed my mild criticism of this movie. Literally a few dozen people went half crazy that I had the temerity to criticize someone's favorite movie. I responded with "OK Karen, I get that you are upset." which unleashed another slew of outraged comments.

I guess in my real life I don't run into many actual "snowflakes" but they sure come out of the woodwork online. Sort of fun to get them riled up. I expect I will be suspended or banned from Facebook any minute now.

What is Facebook other than a electronic soapbox for Karens ,Snowflakes or someone just trying to rouse the masses.
In fact your comments were really just a thumb in the guys eye and you should probably expect a response, which is probably the only reason you made a comment in the first place. You were looking to rile them up so don't be shocked .
There is a lot of reasons I don't do the book of faces but the stirring of Poo for the sake of fun and likes is chief among them.

Being offended is the new national sport.
Facebook is the perfect breeding grounds for those who love to offend and then sit back
and watch the resulting mayhem. It's also for those who pathologically cannot
control their emotions and scream at everything they don't agree with.

I get a far different picture for Facebook. I am on pages like ".45 Colt, Single Action Revolvers, Western style firearms, Ruger Blackhawk Owners, Barranti Leather Company, and similar pages. There are some some oddballs on these, but by and large, good sources of information.

I might see this differently. It looks to me that you were there, to stir the fudge, so to speak.

All the more reason I will not participate in facebook. Folks get their feelers hurt, and eventually things get mean. Facebook has completely divided my family.

the world has become a weird place. a lot of things that use to stay at home or between friends/family is now public content.
if arguments happened in the day, it was usually in a gin mill over too much beer from those trying to wash it away. and some oaf big mouth would always come along and a fight would start.
you sorta knew going into places like that what to expect, but now...it happens anywhere everywhere.
the world is just one big gin mill! lol.

Yeah, America has slipped into a rancorous place, a lot of people have an angry spirit. I dropped Facebook about 10 or 15 years ago, because it was needless.

And now, it’s even more needless.

Facebook is Facebook , that's why I don't go there .

But you did poke the bear with your comment . If you did it in purpose , fine . But the result was predictable .

I didn’t comment specifically to stir the pot. I just sort of blurted out my first reaction.
Keep on rockin', Vito.

I rarely visit Facebook but when I do it's usually to rile the snowflakes, social justice warriors, Karen's , woke folks, and extreme leftist sheep. Oh, and my sisters, who's politics are the polar opposite of mine. 😈

I use FB primarily to keep in touch with my extended family. I do also follow certain authors I like, as well as assorted hobbyist groups mostly involving model trains. A couple of the authors (Larry Correia, in particular) spend as much time in FB jail as out due purely to politics. I'm almost disappointed I haven't gotten a time-out yet, although I did get a snippy lecture for posting this to my timeline:

I don't have a Twitter account, as I'd get banned within the first week.

There's one particular cousin I don't talk to all that much, in the interest of preserving family unity, as she's gone full Leftist (and LGBTWTFBBQ in particular).

Frankly, anyone who spends much time on Facebook is pathologically needy. There is something really sad about the need to be constantly saying, "Look at how special I am..."
Well, count me as pathologically needy, then. I've been in some pretty interesting discussions on Rugers, .45 caliber revolvers, Single Action revolvers and Western style firearms. And, contrary to your statement, I've encountered no one saying, in effect, "Look how special I am."

There's a lot of good observations posted on this thread! Do some folks maybe 'stir the pot', because something strikes them as funny, or because they happen to be in a bad mood? Absolutely, and I imagine people have always been that way. Do some folks over-react to things that are just part of life on planet earth? 'You betcha!' (as they say where I grew up), and I think that's part of human nature, too.

But I do think both groups of Americans are getting larger, and more inclined to be offended - and I think that reflects a changing view of reality in this country. Just guessing because I wasn't alive a hundred years ago, but I have the impression that people used to be more inclined to 'just suck it up' and deal with life back then, than they are today. Basically, they took the admonition to "act like an adult!" a lot more seriously. Maybe people were less inclined to insult your new Model T because it was black; maybe folks were less likely to fall over in a dead faint, if somebody asked if they were taking their favorite horse down to the glue factory.

My wife views it in terms of "assumptions" - people assume everyone has grown past the "Ninja Turtles" stage of life, or on the other hand, they assume that everyone they meet will somehow know how important their new, customized "pronoun" is. Neither assumption is likely true.

I see it in terms of "rights". Do people have a right to tell me I'm ugly or smell bad? Yeah, and they have a right to hear my response, too. On the flip side of that, do people have a right to live an oh-so-nice life, where there are 'trigger warnings' on anything that might increase their heart rate, they're never offended by anything, and almighty Uncle Sam provides for their every need, like the good babysitter he is? My personal response would be a question: "What universe do you live in?"

Obviously IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc.
