P95DC Hammer spring

Has anyone ever changed out or modified the hammer spring to get an easier trigger pull on a P95DC? If so, I would like to know what you did to accomplish that. Thanks in advance.

I don't have a 95 but the 89 model. There is a pin that holds a plug in by the mag well. Pop that pin and the spring comes right out. Install a wolf brand or what ever. Heard some people just cut the spring off but I don't think that is a good way to mod unless you have a known good unit to put back after you screw up. HAHA

Be sure to shine a light into the mag well to see how the metal retaining piece sits before you remove it... it's not that complicated but it will make it easier to put back.

I'm thinking the factory is around 21lbs... and the replacements are really only a pound or 3 less. I put one in one of my P95s and I really could not tell a difference... but then the last two times I shot it... I didn't even shoot double action on the first round... which is all it helps with anyway.

thanks Blume. Ruger told me 9-15 lbs on one phone call and then 10-12 lbs on another. That doesnt sound anywhere close to being right.

hotrodhenson, The reason Ruger gave you different figures is because the double action pull can vary that much depending on the gun. Varying tollerances with the various parts that come into play as well as varying roughness on parts themselves. You can cut a spring from Brownell's spring stock kits (Kit # 71) to fit your needs. I have done that on many occasions in the past. You need to insure that you have good "ignition" in the process. Disassembling the gun and cleaning up the parts will go a long way in securing a "better" trigger pull!......................Dick :wink:

Thanks Dick. My gun is in top shape and is kept that way. I did try a stock spring from a 1911 and the trigger pull was great however it wasnt enough to consistantly fire the rounds without a misfire. I am in the process of finding a happy medium.

Pinecone, I wasn't aware of the #71 spring kit you mentioned. Have you used this for recoil springs as well as hammer springs? Buying specific springs get a little pricey if you are just experimenting. This could be the option I am looking for.

Ken Wolff sells a kit with a 19, 20, & 21 pound mainspring for the Ruger P-series. The stock mainspring is 22 pounds. This kit would allow you to experiment like you want to. I had a 19 pound spring in my P944 for a while & it lightened the pull. After I shot the gun enough for it to smooth up I decided to change back to the stock spring & that is what is in it now. ken 66, I have been using the #69 & #71 Brownell's spring kits ever since they have marketed them! I use them for many firearm requirements. I have found over the years that the specific spring kits for individual guns do not always give you the "result" your looking for. For example, you can often times use a lighter weight spring (smaller coil wire) and make it a little longer than the factory spring and give yourself better "functioning" in specific cases like hammer or recoil springs. There is "enough" stock so if you don't get it at the exact length/strength you want, you have stock left over to try again. They are not the cure-all for every case or need but they have helped me as a gunsmith on hundreds of occasions! I also carry the other kits: # 15, 149, 150 and 152..................Dick :wink:

I switched to Wolff 19 pound springs for a 95, 97, and 944 for a while. Years ago they were talked about quite a lot on this board and many people tried them out without problems. In the end I decided 100% reliability was more important.

I am really more interested in using the #71 spring kit for different recoil springs. Both my P90 and P97 throw brass a long way when shooting 230 LRN. I wonder what a stiffer spring will do. The P89 barely gets them out the ejection port. I wonder what a weaker spring will do.

I installed the Wolff 19# Hammer Spring in my KP95DC and love it. Much smoother trigger pull for me.
