I've got a member of the S.C. firearm owners board that has a problem with is long time owned P-94 and was hoping some of the experts here could help. Here is what he wrote:
For those of you who are gun-smithy savvy, perhaps you can offer your ideas.
Here's the background: Ruger P-94, 9mm stainless, bought new in 1993 and has performed flawlessly in all aspects for 17 years . . . until last night. My favorite pistol, hands down, and I have two that are identical. Both have been fired regularly over the years with somewhere around 3,000 + rounds through each, and never a "fail-to-fire", stove pipe, ETC. They receive a steady diet of 115Gr RN & JHP that I reloaded.
Last night, the one I have an issue with, failed to eject. Had just fired over 20 rounds, when it didn't kick the brass out. ( As you all know, indoor ranges have rather limited lighting, so seeing detail is difficult.) I dropped the Mag, locked the slide back, and taking my knife, caught the cartridge rim and pried it out. It came out with no resistance. I looked at the ejector and extractor; saw nothing unusual, reinserted the mag, released the slide and fired one more round, only to have it repeat itself. I pried out four cases before I just gave up and moved on to another pistol.
Later, once home, I compared both pistols side by side and there was "nothing" different in either. I took the mag out of the one I'd left home and popped it into the pistol that had failed to eject. Every time I racked the slide, it launched a cartridge across my office floor. Retrieved the mag I was using at the range and as it still had cartridges in it, I put it back in the problem pistol. Every rack of slide yielded a normal ejection.
The cartridges I had been shooting were all "my" reloads, and I continued firing from the same batch in a different pistol with no problems.
My understanding of a standard blowback design is when the powder burns, the force does two things:
1. it forces the bullet downrange.
2. it forces the slide back to cycle another round into the chamber and to expel the fired case.
If this is true, How could the slide move backwards, capture a new round and jam it into the rear of the fired cartridge. Doesn't the cartridge "HAVE" to leave the breech to move the slide rearward ?
What I saw happen just doesn't sound possible, based on my "apparently insufficient" knowledge of how the system is supposed to work.
Last thing, I hadn't cleaned either of these two pistols in a long time, got to feeling guilty abut a week ago and went through them both, thoroughly and lubed them both with "snake oil", which is all I've ever used ( Available through Dillon.) From all appearances, it should shoot and eject just fine, but for some reason it didn't at the range. Theories, solutions, anyone ?
