I own several Ruger pistols but have been looking at P-345s. I am a fan of the 45 ACP round for home defense. The only thing that gives me pause is the rails. Most Polymer frame pistols have metal rail inserts where the P-345 doesnt. Also the Ruger site says they do make P-345 with an aluminum alloy frame. Has anyone experienced any problems with the polymer frame with high round counts?

I've had no problems with my P345 although my round count is only 800 and not what I would consider high. Where did you see the information on Ruger's web site that indicates they make an aluminum alloy framed version of the P345?

Fletchman ... First of all welcome to the Ruger Forum ... Glad to have you aboard. Secondly, in answer to your questions:

1. The P series polymer frames have stood the test of time (at least for the 1st 15 years). The P95 & P97 have essentially the same polymer rails as the P345 (My P95 is now over 8,500 and my P345 has over 2,500 rounds with no perceptable rail wear)

2. To the best of my knowledge, the P345 is only available with the polymer grip. You may have it confused with the P90 which has an aluminum grip frame.

Good luck with your decision

While it true that the P345 rides on polymer rails, they do run the full length of the frame, as opposed to the tiny steel rails on some other popular polymer guns.

I too have around 800 flawless rounds through mine, and I can say unequivocally, it is my favorite 45 acp gun. You can buy it with confidence.

I was mistaken regarding an aluminum alloy P-345 . While searching the Ruger site I clicked on a link that was referring to the P-series pistols when I thought it was talking about the P-345. Thanks for the welcome and the feedback. I have always had faith in Ruger products but I am of the age of steel. I have nothing against polymer pistols, the idea however just takes a little getting used to. I am going to purchase a P-345 shortly.

Fletchman ... While I'm of the age of steel as well (and while the idea of polymer pistols took some getting used to), I can't argue with the excellent performance I've received from my P Series pistols (they were my 1st polymers). All things considered ... IMHO it's Ruger's best .45

+1

I've owned two P90's and currently own a P345. The P345 offers better ergonomics than the P90, is thinner/more compact, and makes for a better ccw gun.

My P345 has proved absolutely reliable with FMJ, HP, and cast lead bullet ammo. Over the years, I've owned 45 ACP pistols from many different gun makers including AMT, Astra, Auto Ordnance, Para Ordnance, Ruger, Sig, Springfield Armory, and probably a few others that escape my memory. I consider the P345 the BEST 45 auto I've ever owned.

Don't discount the P90, unless you have held one, and like the feel and size of the others best. I have 2-P97's, a P345, and a P90. The P90 is the one I carry for a CCW. They are all good guns, and have different feel for different size hands. I would recommend examining each one to see which one fits you best. We have several on this Board that carry each one, and each one is their favorite, so you are going to have to personally choose which one fits you best, because one will, if you try all three. If it is just the Rails that you are concerned with, I wouldn't worry. I don't think you would ever shoot one enough for it to ever be a problem. Good Luck. :)

Calvin ... I can't blame you for putting that beautifully engraved P90 of yours in the holster every morning :)

I have just bought a P 345 and it shoots flawlessly. I wanted another gun I could shoot my cast Dillon reloads in and Glock wasn't it...It doesn't outshoot my Govt 1911 by any stretch and it isn't as smooth as the 1911. But I think it is a good gun and will do as a house or car carry gun. It will never be a CCW gun but neither is the 5 inch 1911...I also have a P-95 Decocker and it is a fine gun but Ruger is just not with it on these two guns for concealed carry. Not for me anyway. In Texas you can carry a big gun only a few months of the year and the rest is Keltec PF9 weather with a T shirt...I like Ruger because of the very good price though. It is just not the same now as it was 25 years ago when you could buy a Colt or Sprgfld for $ 300-$400. The 1911 is now out of sight for the average gun owner. But I like a 45 for taking care of business if that need ever comes...and I can carry the big gun in a emptied out Day planner if I need to. I am very fortunate to have a Colt Defender 45 and it is not for sale! But if you want a very good quality 45 buy the Ruger P-345. It is a great gun....bootman
