My 1911 is out getting some engraving and finishing work done. Thinking about some mammoth tusk from these guys for grips. They do all my SAA style revolvers and are absolute masters of handcrafted custom grips.

Got me thinking is Engraving, plating and grips overkill on a ruger?
Let's see those fancy Rugers!

I'd say those grips are what some describe as an acquired taste.

Wood.
Checkered.
But you do you ….. lotsa folks like horns and many like the distressed look too

It's your Ruger and your business what you put on it. I don't know of anyone who would make fun of that. The grips shown are very nice in my opinion.

Its your gun, If you like it good for you. Don't end up like the old man the boy and the donkey where they tried to please everyone .

A Man and his son were once going with their Donkey to market. As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said: "You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?"

So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way. But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said: "See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides."

So the Man ordered his Boy to get off, and got on himself. But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other: "Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along."

Well, the Man didn't know what to do, but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them. The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The men said: "Aren't you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yours and your hulking son?"

The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole, tied the donkey's feet to it, and raised the pole and the donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge, and his fore-feet being tied together he was drowned.

"That will teach you," said an old man who had followed them: "Please all, and you will please none."

I like them. I've got a lot of stag grips on my rugers, but never had the chance to see mammoth done on one. I think they'd look very nice on a blued gun too

First, I really like those grips on a stainless 1911 pistol. Second, I don't care what you put on your 1911, I Iike to routinely rotate different grips on it. Each time you do it's like you have a new handgun.

I agree with many of the other comments. Do whatever makes you happy. It is your gun. Enjoy it.

Not my cup of tea, I prefer 1911's to look GI but you do you. I do have a mammoth tusk carved fish hook my wife got me in Lahaina Maui about ten years ago. It hangs on my cars rear view mirror. I love it

Hell who cares they are yours......people give me crap because I like Pachmayr's on some of my 1911's, Hi Power and revolvers. If you like it do it. Screw everyone else.

I wouldn't mind horn grips on a 1911...but I don't care for any engraving scrolly things or scenes.

My favorite color is Olive Drab......don't care what anyone else's is.

It's your firearm, it's your money. Why ask anyone? do what YOU want not what pleases me. Smart, silly, overkill, not enough? You decide. Show it off if you want, I like to look, not own.
