Overkill on a Ruger 1911?

I like those grips against blued steel, they probably would look just as nice on stainless steel also. To me, grips are very important, specially on a 1911 pistol, appearance as well as fit and comfort.

I really appreciate the fancied up guns, they are works of art. At some point I'd love to have something like that done, but I just look at my guns, and can't think what I'd do with them, so they're all pretty stock. The only thing that I have done is change out to the stock grips for the Hogue wrap around finger grips.

I like the smooth bone better but it is your pistol. Do as you wish.

Nothing wrong with dressing up a Ruger! They're built tough enough to handle the fancy treatment and still work hard. Mammoth tusk grips sound awesome, especially paired with some nice engraving. A good-looking gun that still runs like a tank is never overkill in my book.

Wood.
Checkered.
But you do you ….. lotsa folks like horns and many like the distressed look too

It is your pistol and if you want to change it up to suit you go for it and don't let anyone talk you out of it. While I prefer smooth Mammoth over the outer layer I am the exception it seems. I considered Mammoth grips for my 1911 but went with nice figured walnut from Culina.

I prefer the fossilized tooth cut on my 1911 and the ivory on my revolvers. Like the mammoth ivory they are delicate so definitely more for the BBQ gun. You will not see a return on your investment, but they sure do look good.

Scott is a much better photographer, so I stole his picture of my Bowen 45 Colt with the blue hue to match the Turnbull coloring.

Hell who cares they are yours......people give me crap because I like Pachmayr's on some of my 1911's, Hi Power and revolvers. If you like it do it. Screw everyone else.

I wouldn't mind horn grips on a 1911...but I don't care for any engraving scrolly things or scenes.

My favorite color is Olive Drab......don't care what anyone else's is.
Some times it just requires some time to acquire a taste. I never cared much for Pachmayr grips myself either until I bought my used Smith & Wesson model 64 snub nosed revolver. It had a set of Pachmayr combat grips on it and they are the most comfortable grips I have owned.
