Open Carry Suggestions?

"Many cross draw holsters actually make it easier for an assailant to grab your gun than for you to grab it."
In what way and what type of cross draw are you referring to? It's not easier for 'an assailant' to grab a pistol that can only be drawn in a forward movement. I use a relatively inexpensive KYDEX holster with only the grip of the formed polymer as retention BUT there's only one way the pistol comes out and that direction in right in front of my body. A 'gun grabber' is going to have to defeat both my hands/elbows to reach the pistol. In fact, my left hand/arm will be dealing with this action while my right hand is deploying the knife from my right front pocket.
A moderate sized pistol carried cross draw in front of the weakside hip is relatively discreet and easily defendable.
It seems that you've got everything figured out, and are comfortable in your perception of how an attack on your person will always play out...so no further reply from me needed.
Good luck in your endeavors.

#26 post by Mobuck. I would say some cross draw holsters make a gun snatch easy. Why? Most people when attacked or even when another person gets to close, they back up. IF the attacker has hold of the gun in a cross draw holster the good guy with the cross draw will likely back away. That move could literally give the attacker your gun.
The same could be said about some holsters carried strong hand side. If the attack comes from behind and the good guy trys to escape forward the gun snatcher might also just grab the butt and the good guy pulling away gives the bad guy his open carry gun. Training it's all about training to defend from a person trying to snatch your gun. If you don't know what to do, he may have your gun before you react.

A Dog's rump have to be cleaner than most folks hands,, they are always cleaning it by licking.... how many of us clean our hands that way?
This whole germ phobia thing has very little to do with the real world.... last I heard the average persons hand has something like 10billion bacteria on it... the thing is something like 99.9% of it is good bacteria that we need. If you did not have those Germs inside you, your food would not digest.

The only time I've had a gun taken away from me was by a SC state trooper and he asked for it pretty politely. The irony is after I unloaded it and gave it to him, he did not realize I had another loaded one right beside me.

Looks to me as though this thread has run off completely into the weeds....so...being's how the present subject seems to be animal butts, I have something to add myself:

Back when the Wife and I had horses, I often thought that if I could teach a horse but one useful trick, I'd teach it to crap in a bucket....We had four of them at the time and if that could have been pulled off, it would have saved me hours of shoveling.

While I "Carry Openly" I srt of hedge on that. I carry a Ruger Blaclhawk in a leather holster with no retention strap or thong. I carry about at the 4:00 o'clock position. But my gun is covered by a jacket, sport coat or suit coat for Sunday, or a vest in hot weather. So at times, the toe of my holster does show, but not the gun butt itself. Not my evereyday holster in the phtototo:

Open carry is for the woods and backcountry. Open carry in town only serves to make gun owners look threatening and gives us a poor image.
Where you from out here in the hicks most people are carrying openly and the rest for the most part are concealed carrying. It's no big deal to see a handgun around here. I have to admit that I live in a RED State.

The only open carry I did in town was in a uniform at work. There is probably a reason why someone would open carry in town while in plain clothes but I do not know what that is unless it is to make the statement that this is their right.

DGW... just seems you got a lot of practice for what goes on here in one form or another....

On the other hand, I don't know a thing about flying a plane, trapping animals, growing dope or cleaning chimneys...Just sayin' that we don't all come from the same sorts of backgrounds.

Flying planes, trapping animals, cleaning chimneys, yep...read about them here often, ....but who's talking about growing dope?????
How did we go from a open carry discussion to dogs butts, horses crapping in buckets to dope growing?

I'm off to my Doc appt....for the record I won't be open carrying.

Open carry without a retention device on the holster brings this story to mind. Late1980s I was enroute to police training traveling through small town Oregon. A stop at a small town restaurant and trip into the men's room. Two uniformed cops were bent over washing their hands side by side. Each carried their guns in real nice leather holsters without any safety straps. I thought any wack job could have disarmed either one as they where busy. But heck it's small town Oregon, safe from the crooks where I worked.
2011 in the same city the PD chief alone responded to a call where a crook was attempting to steal a car. The crook was unarmed. He fought or resisted arrest. He grabbed the chiefs gun and killed the PD chief. I will never know if the chief was one of the two I seen years earlier. Or if the killer pulled the gun out of the chief's holster or hand.

Allowed open carry protects you from being hassled if your concealed gun happens to show while walking around.

In MS, it also protects you from being hassled if you have your fully loaded gun laying openly in your car if you get pulled over for a traffic violation or other encounter with the local LEO whether you have a carry permit or not.

Go back and carefully read post #1, read it's last paragraph aloud, and then read the next two post. It is obvious that by post #3 this thread had already begun to get off topic. We are now on post #46 and it still is....It may eventually drift back but who knows?....No big deal, happens a lot on open forums....LOL.

I think this is a timely subject, so I'm trying to get the thread back on track;
You eluded to it, but at this point it was pretty much still on track...

This reply to "part" of a on topic reply started it
I doubt that, especially when the dog rubs it's ars on the grass.
This just fueled it..

Ok? this thread didn't go off the OP topic until you for the most part incited it to for whatever reason......now I understand the growing dope part...are you going to give soil and climate tips for the other growers that may be here?

Nobody hassles me, ever. Not that I am some kind of bad ass. Just large and living in a community where people do not engage in that kind of behavior. Northern New Mexico is a friendly place, behind the times maybe. It could also be all the Mota the Vatos smoke here!

I've driven thru NM probably a dozen times, never spent more than 3 or 4 days there on any given trip, but always thought the people were great, and of course the scenery. :)

I do have a 2nd cousin who is (or was) a sheriff in one of the small towns. Don't recall which one tho. He's about 20 years younger than me so he's probably retired by now. Only met him once back around the early '90's. He and his wife were making a motorcycle trip around the country and we met up in WA for a couple hours for lunch.

You know, your reading comprehension skills really need some work. I've already said that I don't know anything about growing dope...and as far as that goes, I ain't never even smoked any......Sorry you found it so hard to keep up but thanks for playing. LOL.

 Must've gone right over your head I'm guessing.....talk about comprehension! 🤣

Well thanks for the play time then....it was so easy to keep up that you were passed and didn't even know it ;)

What I was alluding to was you having to shovel all that horse manure and that would come in handy in many ways on this forum... not being demeaning just making a joke on all of us.
As for the original question, I think I gave my answer to that pretty well.

Lately we have had some threads about open carry. There has been some debate about whether or not it is a wise practice & a video posted showing a person's gun being grabbed along with the audio of him being killed. I have seen people open carrying in ways that seem really unwise to me. From carrying a DA/SA pistol chamber empty, hammer cocked to carrying in a holster without active retention way behind the hip, & other stuff. So, I thought maybe if we were to have a thread where we discussed what we believe are the best ways to open carry it might be helpful to someone.
I do understand that carrying in the woods or a rural area might be different than carrying in a more populated area.
What do you believe is the right way to open carry? What features should an open carry holster have? What position for it? etc.
When I see people openly carrying, I don't usually care. I do feel a bit of embarrassment for the person if their holster is crappy, their belt is sagging or if it otherwise looks like the rig is set up for failure.

What made me post this thread happened a week or so ago. I had stopped at a local restaurant on the way home from work. I was getting a coffee to go. I was seated at a stool at the counter. An older couple came in they went to one end of the place then decided they wanted to sit on the other. When they came in they turned so that the man's left side was towards me. I noticed nothing. When they changed direction & came back the man stopped behind me waiting on a table to be cleared. I turned partway & seeing his right side saw his pistol in an open top holster carried openly at about 4 o'clock. I could have turned & snatched it very easily if I had wanted. I don't find open carry offensive. I do find it concerning that someone would put themselves in a vulnerable position & be oblivious to it.

How do you know you could successfully snatch his handgun? I know several guys older than I that if you tried that you would first end up lying on the ground and second wondering if they were going to shoot you in the face just for fun.

Pretty sure anyone could. He was not aware of what was going on around him & the gun was not secured. He was oblivious.

I guess if you were a nut job then the next logical (smart) thing to do would be to shoot him... say the oblivious guy is a retired Marine.... there is a good chance that years of training might just kick in and you find your self on the floor and everything going dark.
I'm not a fan of open carry but I'm still trying to find the statistics of all these people who are grabbing open carriers guns.
I actually saw my second open carrier here in S.C. since they passed the law 2 or more years ago.... guy on a motorcycle passed me on the interstate.... looked like a 1911 to me but it was quick... I was doing about 65 and he was going over 75. Looked like a full size pistol with a single stack grip. I may just have to check and see if the video is still on the dash camera.

I'll tell a lesson I learned back as a teenager.... I grew up down here in S.C. in a very rural farm community... there was what I call a country store over on Hwy 25 and Blackie Randle ran it... every body knew everybody else.. I was young and cocky and had just bought myself a Crossman 454 CO2 BB pistol and even had a holster for it and was carrying it concealed and I decided to scare old Mr. Blackie with it.... walked up the counter and pulled it out and I don't think I even pointed it at him... but I never saw him move just all of a sudden there was a pistol pointed right at my head. Some folks might criticize the old geezer for this, but he taught me a valuable lesson that day. And I've been reminded of it for the next 50 or so.... read here once from some vet: "Once the enemy is engaged the plan will change."

I had some time to try to look up stats "Open carriers of firearms, disarmed". Citizens not cops.
My search was not easy, information hard to find what I wanted.

1 Boldy said 30 known cases. I couldn't get cases or dates of those.

Another listed cases and dates but had data mixed in with CCW carriers also disarmed.

There was a summary that read like what most on here said. The list did not put these facts in any order of importance or precent of cases.
Most cases happened at night.
Failure of situational awareness
Failure to use a retention holster
No training or skills on how to retain gun
Using gun as a talisman rather than a tool

The last point to me is the worse reason to carry a gun.
