I have one of those OM SBH that has been cut to 5" also. That would by my choice. It just seems to fit right.

Four inch Security Six in .357. Head shoot bunnies and grouse with .38's. Body shoot bigger stuff with .357's. Handles snake loads well. Six shots, no jamming. Grab and go. Wife can operate it.

One gun here? One hundred maybe. But if I absolutely had to pare down to only one, the old reliable Security Six would be my choice.

If I'm able to reload (components will ALWAYS be there) the (my) 45 colt Blackhawk with 4 5/8 tube with a SBH gripframe and hammer.

If stuff becomes scarce, Black Powder can be homemade along with primers, so my ROA would be a better choice. I don't know the FPS but it has been sent to Clements to be backbored.

My one do-it-all gun is a 4" S&W Model 629-4. It can be carried, almost comfortably, and would certainly get the job done for that or most anything else needed by a handgun. But a very close second is my Ruger 4 5/8" SS SuperBlackhawk. It's just a little slower for SD purposes, but can also perform well if needed. Both are plenty accurate.

(I was just doing some reading this AM and was going to be "clever" and just say, "One gun? Ruger!" ) :lol:

...but in truth,... I"ve had two Ruger SS security-sixes in my life, and am simply disgusted that I let my exes keep 'em. I hope I can find another 4" in fine condition soon. I ain't never lettin' go!

Love my Redhawk. Love my P97. Love my SW Mod 66 ...but it ain't as compact/rugged as a Security Six.

I don't think it hurts at all to seriously analyze our choices of carry/hunting/etc gun by putting together an unlikely/uncomfirtable scenario....
I remember the article as a reprint and it inspired a series of "if i could only have one" articles.
If memory serves me, wasn't the question first asked of him by a younger person? which inspired the concept for the article?

i honestly don't know at this point which i would choose. It is hard to get a 44 to do the job required of a .22 for example.
But I think I would stick the the biggest baddest caliber, due simply to my need to keep any bad bear away. Of course that is assuming that my only hangun would be my only gun....

Anyhow.. it's nice to take a serious look... what..for example, if you found yourself unable to get back home and the one you had with you was the only one you could/would, have for a while to do everything?
Would it still be the DAO 9mm?

Which brings up another topic I will post later, that I believe could be a fun informative topic...

Most of you have a lot more experience with handguns than do I; however, after recently acquiring a newer version (used) Single Six again after an absence of many years, I can truthfully say that it probably will be firing long after most other action types are worn out, broken, or destroyed.

Besides, unless my ears are worse than I thought, every time I cock the hammer back and then let it down, it seems to click to me, "I love you."

Seriously, one gun for all situations brings to mind an o/u rifle combo like the old Savage 24 in .22/12 ga. Most widely used cartridge in the world over the most used shotshell. If it must be a handgun, where would the Taurus Judge rank?

Interesting how many of you would pick a single action. It would be my second choice unless the law required it.

I shudder at the thought of only one. :shock:
I have a safe load to choose from - would be a hard choice to make. Let's hope and pray it never comes to that.

Well, since it would have to be a CCW gun, i'd opt for a Sig 239 .40

My S&W 29-5 in 6.5".
Even with my love for the 1911, Sig, Beretta, the SAA Colt, Ruger Blackhawk's and Vaquero's still leave me with the one gun question to be answered with the S&W.
I can carry it, hunt with it and reload up or down to cover just about any need.

Much as I dote on my .45 BH, I'd probably throw in with ol' Skeeter's advice and pick a .357....In my case, that'd be my M19-4 6" Combat Magnum....Deadly accurate, cheap to reload, and enough horsepower to get the job done....However, I'd pick a plain base bullet mold to go with it, even though Skeeter's favorite 358156 is a fine projectile. I wouldn't want to mess with a GC bullet in a survival situation....(Maybe he wouldn't either nowadays, with the larger selection of cast bullet designs)
