i get hi speed thru a land line with brightspeed.
ok, lightning took out my modem/router.
it was 15 years old. worked fine. there is another one on ebay.
q: my service provider sold me the 15 year old one.
do i have to buy another one thru them and upgrade or can i just buy the same model used one on ebay and plug it in and get back internet? or is it a key code thing?

The used one will have to be configured by your provider.

I would go with a new updated one from your provider. Just because it will have the newest security features and up to date firmware.

I see we typed at the same time. I'm not sure what needs configured in a router. Any router that has the same plug should work. It doesn't even have to be the same brand.

With the land line, this is a DSL router, correct? But (and I’m joking here) you are using the term “high speed” wrongly)

This is not a piece of electronics I would attempt to buy used. Too any variables to know whether you're wasting money on junk, and too much time troubleshooting if anything goes wrong. I'd buy another one from your provider.

Routers are cheap, your provider will prob replace and config it for you.

I live in a different part of the country than you but my phone and internet provider is also Brightspeed. Mine went bad about a year ago. They provided me with another one for free.

brightspeed either sells or leases one.
200.00 bucks for a new one.
ebay...15.00 exact same one that got fried.
can you see my question now?
also too, only time i can remember having to deal with key codes was for them to access my modem from their office when it had a problem. by giving them the code, they took control of it to troubleshoot it.
logic....why would they have asked for my key code if they already had it?
we are old technology out here. old is ok for me. my 15 year old one was working fine. im willing to gamble on a used one.
just needed to know about key codes.
mine is marked westell. ebay one is marked att.
but, its the same modem. all plugs are exactly the same.

At one time I was renting a modem from our carrier. I got tired of the rental fee and bought a generic one. Then, anytime we had a service issue they would go on and on telling me that it was my modem that was the issue and they would go no farther. I finally got tired of it and had them install one of their modems. Funny thing is, they no longer charge me a rental fee. It's probably just figured into the monthly charge.

The internet we now have and I just love is from Verizon. It's a flat $60 per month, no added taxes. Plus no modem rental.

It's a small cube that plugs into a wall socket for electricity. That's it.

It incredibly fast as well. No land line required. Apparently it connects to the internet through the nearest Verizon cell phone tower.

No you don't need a Verizon cell phone. And there is no data limit.

This thing. It's about 6 inches per side.
