Non Ruger problem

I have a Browning Hi power that I 'resurrected' from a ball of rust. Took it to the range yesterday. Everything functions now until I load a magazine in it. At that point the trigger will not function (cannot pull it). Works fine with the magazine out. I can see where the trigger is hitting the magazine. Actually look as though a slot is needed that isn't there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Has the gun ever worked with THAT magazine?

After being totally frustrated I disassembled it and found my problem. There is a plunger (for lack of actually knowing what it's called) on the trigger assembly that wasn't moving. A couple squirts of brake cleaner then a liberal dose of silicone WD-40 and the 'plunger' now functions as designed. I guess my resurrection wasn't quite as complete as I thought. This isn't my pistol, so I never knew what did or didn't work. Back to the range on Tuesday.

discovered the same type of problem with one of my Sig P239's... which are basically the same design as a P226 just cut down with a single stack magazine... there is a plunger that needs to be pushed up in the slide for the firing pin to move forward and it was jammed. Not a part you would normally clean just put a small drop of oil on.... but somehow some crude got in there and locked it up.... I ended up having to learn how to disassemble the slide which I have never done before.... actually not that hard to do once you've done it 12 or 13 times... (freaked me out that this happened and so I ended up cleaning all (well most) of my other Sig P239's and 226s....)

Sounds like you're talking about about the magazine safety which keeps it from firing with the mag out. As I recall, it is easily removable with a single pin in the trigger.

There is a mag safety but that wasn't the problem per se. As I stated above it is the little 'plunger' (part of the mag safety device) that contacts the magazine that wasn't moving as required. It initially wouldn't fire with the magazine IN. Working fine now

So are y'all saying a Browning Highpower has a magazine disconnect feature..... that won't let the gun function / fire unless there is one inserted?
Just didn't think there would be such a 'lawyer' feature on such an 'old' design.... this is one of the guns I wanted as a teenager after reading the book Serpico.

Yep. Part of the original design from 1935. I believe it was a requirement for the military trials. Pretty easy to remove.

The first mod I made to my BHP was removing the magazine disconnect safety.....when did the French ever have a good idea anyway?
