New Ruger 22/45 Problems

I purchased a new Ruger P512MIIIRP (22/45) Model 10140 with the removeable 1911 type grips on April 3, 2011. The gun jams all the time with all types/brands of ammo. Sometimes tries to feed 2 cartridges at once. sometimes stovepipes. sometimes the spent cartridge is not removed from the chamber. etc. etc. The gun is unsafe to shoot. I cleaned and oiled it like my old 22/45 (that has never jammed) and still no joy.
I do not think i should have to pay shipping to return the gun to Ruger for repair. What is up with this??? I don't think i have ever seen a ruger mark that jammed. Thanks for letting me air my grievance. :x

I just picked up a used one - made Dec 2010.
It was almost brand new in LGS and I couldn't believe someone already putting it on sale.

Well now I know.
I can't get the bolt in after I have both upper and lower hammered together.
If I put the bolt in the upper and then hammer them together, it comes together ok.

With empty mag in, when I hit the bolt release, the mag drops out.
With rounds in the mag, it doesn't happen.

But luckily it shoots fine.

As for having to pay for shipping.
Is that what Ruger said?
I had in the past send my MKIII Hunter back to Ruger twice.
Both times they sent me a shipping box to put it in.
IF I remember correctly, they email me the shipping labels.

This sounds like
1. the hammer is not properly set after you hammer the receiver on. To put the bolt in, you have to have the hammer correct.
2. the bolt release is not in the down position.

With empty mag in, when I hit the bolt release, the mag drops out.
With rounds in the mag, it doesn't happen.

This happened to me as well, but the problem was an easy fix. Notice that when you put the magazine in but pushing straight up, it will stay positioned with what seems like a positive click. Rack and release the bolt and the magazine drops out. Even though the magazine "seems" to be locked, if you push on the rear bottom corner of the magazine you should hear a much louder positive click. The solution is to not push the magazine straight up, but rather push it in from the bottom rear in a forward slant along the grip angle. I do that now and no problems.

I think when I am shooting and loading full magazines, I just tend to be more conscious of a good "seat". With an empty I'm just not as careful, hence the not-fully-seated magazine. FWIW.

But luckily it shoots fine.

I have the hammer in the correct position.
I don't have any trouble when I use a different upper on it.
A SS 6 7/8" Hunter upper instead of the original 5.5 Blue Target upper.

I think it is because I might not have the original upper lined up completely. It is so tight and I didn't want to hammer too hard on the polymer grips.
Anyway I bought the gun to put the exttra SS 6 7/8" Hunter upper on it so I am not going to mess w/the original upper.

I have to try the mag again by pushing the rear.

The gun jams all the time with all types/brands of ammo.

A few things to consider:

Cleaning thoroughly the LCI or replacing it with a metal LCI filler
Replacing the stamped extractor with a Volquartsen exact edge extractor
Adjusting clearance between the lip of the magazine and the ejector

Ruger fixed my pistol. they said they repaired the ejector. They also fixed it so my magazines don't pop out all the time when i fire it. they paid for ship both ways. my only complaint is with UPS!! They were so rough with shipping it they broke the right grip going to ruger (ruger replaced it). and when i got it back the barrel had scuff marks on it from smashing around in the hard plastic case. My recommendation is : use Fedex if you have a choice or ship the gun in something like a soft case inside a heavy cardboard box.

The gun works flawlessly now like a ruger should. It is a tack driver and makes me look like a pro. The cocobolo grips are beautiful.

Just FYI: When I had to send back a single-action for repair, Ruger insisted that I NOT return the revolver in the original plastic case.

They wanted me to wrap it up instead and put it in a box. Also suggested using a soft cloth to wrap around it. Ruger told me the revolver gets too beat up in shipping when using their plastic factory case.

Lot of good info posted above, Call the good folks at ruger, There customer service in my opinion is second to none. They will send you out a box and send the gun in. Depending on your sates firearms policy, it may have to be redelivered to an FFL. probably include a hat or extra mag for your inconvenience .

I have the EXACT same issue with my MKIII Hunter SS. I've tried everything and it still does the double feed, failure to extract and stovepipe jams. I just contacted Ruger for the second time about this POS pistol-the first time their response was to "try more kinds of ammunition". Well. My old MK II shoots everything, so I tried CCI Mini-Mag, Blazer & Standard, Remington Target Rifle, Thunderbolt & Standard, Winchester Super-X and 555, Fiocchi, Aguilla, Federal Champion, Federal American Eagle, Eley Club, RWS Target Pistol and probably a couple of others! I'm so sick of detail stripping and cleaning this paperweight.

Hopefully Ruger will offer to actually REPAIR my MKIII this time. I'm still waiting for a return letter/call/email from customer service.
In the mean time , I picked up a MKII 22/45 used. Much better trigger than the MKIII's

I am surprised hear this,I have a MK III hunter also, never had a problem with it. I have shot all the same ammo you mentioned, has worked flawlessly and have about 25k rounds through it.
There is an adjustment for the stock trigger, but you have to dissemble the pistol to adjust it, I know makes no sense.
This is what I have done to mine I hand polished the feed ramp,( you could have a burr on the feed ramp, recheck it, will cause a FTF ) added an VQ target hammer,sear and trigger, trigger now breaks at 1.8 lbs smooth as silk,while I was at it replaced the MK III bushing with a MK II bushing thus eliminating that ridiculous magazine safety.
Check the extractor too for the FTE, or just replace it with a VQ.

I am surprise at ruger response,usually they are right on top of things. Let me knw how you make out.

brand new to these forums w/ my brand new 22/45 (10107) and I have a few related questions.

1. first time shooting one of the mags would back out about 1 or 2mm (and not feed) - Ruger replaced it :) it worked fine, I lost track of A vs B mag. 100 rounds later; one of the mags sometimes stovepipes the first rnd (not an ammo thing - I'm sure) - ideas?
Maybe this gun is not broken in? (less than 300 rnds through it).

2. Noticed today that the small set screw just infront of the rear sight has loosened up - what is it for? and should I loctite it? (I know first hand loctite red is a PITA to undo - so best I ask first.

3. Buddy w/ a mkII tells me "never insert a mag w/ the bolt closed.
True? (This should be an RYFM thing, but I don't recall seeing it).

Any and all help is appreciated.

Well after an email Friday and a phone call to SRC Customer service today-my MK III Hunter is on its way to Prescot AZ for repair on Ruger's dime.
