New member question: SR9 or P95SS

Hello!
I am looking at a couple pistol at my LGS. A SR9 for $399 and a P95 Stainless for $350. (I get another $50 or $75 off depending on how much I buy)
Which is the better pistol for the money? I'm sticking with 9mm just because of costs, trying to keep things cheap to shoot so I WILL shoot!

They both look like nice guns but could use some input.

I would go with the P95(DC). I've owned the p95 and sr9c. In my opinion the p95 is more reliable, plus I prefer the hammer over a striker fired pistol.

I would say handle them both and get a feel for the triggers too. They are two very different guns! I tend to like the trigger better on hammer guns better, but really like the feel of the sr9, not so much the trigger though. Even though I have an sr9 I might prefer the p95.

I got rid of my SR9c because I couldn't slingshot the slide...spring way too strong for me. I don't know how this is on the SR9. The 95 racks really nice. My only complaint is the thumb safety being on the slide makes it slightly harder to slingshot without hurting you. I keep the 95 loaded but without a round chambered so slingshotting a slide is important to me. 95 was always easier to shoot and way more accurate in my hand. Sooo... do you want hammer or hammerless? Is slingshot important...test both? The 95 is a permanent member of the household.

They are both wonderful guns I don't think you could go wrong with either. I would go try both in your hand get what ever feels the best to you.You are going to here good and bad on any gun but remember Ruger has a great service department ,not when but if something should ever go wrong they will take care of you.

I could barely rach the slide on my 9c at first, but after a couple hundred rounds it's much easier. Same with the slide-lock, had to use two hands at first, now it's much easier and can do it with just y thumb. Uh oh, you said SR9- sorry...

That being said, Buy them both!
That being said you should try both at the range. I'm sure you can rent the SR9. Not so sure about the P-95

As many have said it all comes down to feel and prefrence. Some don't like striker pistols, some don't like hammers. Some don't like the DA pull of the first shot and would prefer single action.

If this was me, I'd place my vote on how easily accessible a PC9 (Ruger's 9mm carbine) would be or whether or not you're even interested in one.

If you don't know about the PC9 or not planning to ever get one, I'd go for the more modern pistol design (SR9 or SR9c).

Other than the hammer vs striker comparison, the p95 also has the advantage of being able to swap mags with the PC9.

*Add a shotgun in there and you have yourself a 3-gun competition set.

p95 Built and reliable like a tank. I have both, Love the SR series. But the P series will never fail you. Very Proven Platform.

My vote would be for the P95 if it is a decocker only... but I suspect it is a safety model... still I lean toward that... but in all honesty I have no experience with the SR9...

I think the suggestion to handle and if possible shoot both styles first and then decide is the best.

How old are you? If you're over 40 you probably will like the hammer fired no safety P95. If you are under 30 you will probably like the SR9 with all it's new fangled safety giz-moes.
Seriously both will probably do what you want and more. I prefer the P95.

I once would have said never buy a decocker/safety P series, only decock only. But after 10 years I've come to change my mind. The decock only is still preferable, but it's not longer a deal breaker for me.

The P95 is a bulkier, heavier gun. You will often hear it referred to as, built like a tank... it is. The SR9 is lighter and slimmer. Your intended use should determine which you purchase. I have both and will not get rid of either. I like shooting them both even though they feel completely different in hand. I love my Rugers. :D

To answer your question, they are both very good values.

SR9 sort of compares to the M&P, XD, and Glock striker fired guns.

P95 sort of compares more to FNP9 and SIG 2022 - DA/SA plastic handguns, and perhaps the CZ75B.

I'm really just talking about how they operate here, so nobody flame me for comparing a P95 to the holy grail all-steel CZ (I can be snarky, I have 3 of 'em).

Very different handguns, in other words. But good values both.
