Need help finding a part for a 96/22

I have a customer whose 96/22 .22 LR doesn't feed unless he pushes up in the mag. He thinks it needs a new magazine latch spring (part #L03700). Ruger told him they don't have any. He called Numrich, Jack First, Moyers, and Rody's. No luck at any of them.

Anyone got a lead on where he can find this part? Or, is there a fix that might not involve a new spring? I don't have the gun in hand, as he is in Alaska.

I checked Midway and no luck there either.
In looking at the parts diagram, I wonder if the spring could not be
"opened up" (a la the 1911 magazine spring). It looks like that might
help.

Other thought is, does he have a new magazine to try?

If all else fails,,, a good gunsmith that knows how to make springs might be able to help.

A good cleaning and a new magazine might be a good place to start. Might be the plunger is gummed up and not locking the mag in the correct position. Or the particular mag and the plunger are not playing nice for some reason. Make sure everything is moving freely as is should and try a few different mags before part hunting.
