Called local Cabelas and they are all sold out. So ordered one on line. I could not pass it up at that price.

I paid $200 more for all stainless with the black stock, a couple of years ago. Very lightweight, and comes to my shoulder effortlessly. The only part that chaps my hide is the inability to use longer cartridges because of the magazine restricting the length to 1.65 inches. Of course you can shoot the longer cartridge single shot, but I bought a repeater cause that is what I wanted.

Well they DID list blued/walnut at the time I posted, must have quickly sold out! .... gone now.
I got a synthetic stocked model - thanks for the heads up!

Back up to $800.00 now. Anybody know if the 77/44 shoots well with mid-weight lead bullets? Something like a 240 grain SWC at 1300 fps.

My 77/44 favors jacketed bullets at higher velocities for accuracy. Cast lead bullets 240 grain at 1000 FPS give about 2 inches at 50 yards, making it hard to hit with them past 70 yards. I have a 6" swinging steel hung at 70 yards that I can hit regularly with cast lead, another at 140 yards that needs jacketed 240 grain bullets to hit.
My 240 grain jacketed bullets use enough 2400 to get 1300 FPS from a revolver.
The jacketed bullets group to 2-3" at 100 yards fired from a benchrest, rifle equipped with a Leupold 1X4 power compact shotgun scope.

Hmm, I wonder if the bore on these is a wee bit oversize. Most .357 and .44 lever actions are most accurate with a lead bullet properly sized. Do you cast your own? What are they sized to?

I do cast my own, 240 grain tumble lube bullet from a Lee mold, sized .429, and loaded to 900 FPS. The same bullet shoots better out of my Rossi 92, but that rifle can't be scoped, the 77/44 can.
There is a note in the owners manual that best results are obtained with jacketed high velocity bullets, going so far as to say "avoid cheap cast lead ammunition", or something to that effect. Didn't see the same note in my 77/357 rifle owners manual.

The magazine limits cartridge length to 1.65 inches, which limits heavy for caliber lead projectiles. Of course you can use it as a single shot with the longer bullets

I shoot lead boolits from mine all the time, 200 grains up to 310. .429 is likely too small, I size mine to .432 and get good accuracy. I wish the magazine could take a longer oal and swc boolits don't feed great. But I really like the handiness of the rifle.
I picked up 4 today at my local Cabelas. I was hoping I could present my FFL and be out of there in 15 minutes.

Question - anyone get the wood version.
I order one wood and one in synthetic and only the plastic one came in and the other has not even been charged to my card.

I hope you get it . cabelas has a poor record of coming through on orders :( They show firearms as "in stock " that are not even in the system, they have pulled this on me 3 times . I gave up on them .R77PA said:

Well Cabelas never notified me so I started calling today. Found out my order was cancelled 3 days (Nov 6) after order but they never told me. Said can not do anything for me as thee were a close out. I am a black card member but probably will not be going forward. Hard to believe a computer system would list them as available but not have any in stock. What a way to run a business. I guess they do not know what they really have in stock. I do not think I will be patronizing them too much any more. I will spend my $$ on another credit card. They do not really care as they sold the CC business.

The night I ordered mine I did not see the wood stock option. I do prefer wood stocks as a rule and I would have selected that option had I seen it. At that price, I can shop around and perhaps locate a wood stock. I am happy with how mine performs currently and will most likely leave it alone. One reason I got it is to same on the wear and tear on my No.1 44 mag. I like the idea of being able to put that synthetic stock 44 down in the gravel or sand while hunting here in AZ. I could not bring myself to do that with my No.1.

The marketing guys have got to figure it out and work to make sure they do not offer something that they do not have. A phone call to you explaining the situation was in order for sure. Perhaps letting you know and offering you a synthetic stock version before they sold out. Letting weeks pass is just plain bad business.
