my favorite .327 load

My 327 Blackhawk is quickly becoming my favorite revolver. The last several times I've been to the range it has been consistently very accurate. I've been reloading for it for a while and 9.5 grains of HP38, small rifle primer and 100 grain jacketed bullet. The Rainier brand from Midway.

Not sure why small rifle primer but that is from the Hornady reloading manual and they do just fine.

Anyone else have a favorite 327 load? I'm going to order some more bullets soon, should I stick with the 100 grain or get something else, maybe heavier? Before I shot the 85 grain xtp from Hornaday. They were ok at best, definitely not as good as these Rainier 100s.

9.5 grs of HP38/231 seems like an extremely heavy charge with that 100 gr. bullet, not sure where maximum is but I'm guessing you've passed it. A slower powder would be a lot safer, I could be wrong.

Data from the Hodgdon data page shows a MAX charge of 5.4 grains of HP38 under the Hornady 100 grain xtp bullet giving 1261 fps and 39,800 psi.

I'd double check that load of 9.5 grains. You could be courting disaster there. :shock:

Oh. This is news. I'll look into it. As far as felt recoil it is less than factory ammo. I will look into it. I just shot 50 rounds this morning. No split cases or anything unusual.

Oh you know what. It isn't HP38. It is H110. My mistake. I was also shooting 38's and I had 3.5 grains of HP38 in them.

Sorry for the confusion. Does 9.5 of H110 sound better. I'm still fairly new to reloading.

The 3.5 grains of HP38 was a bit mild too.

That sounds much better! Near as I could figure with the Powley that first load with HP-38 would produce 2200 FPS at 57,000 PSI from your Ruger---But not for long!

Thanks. Yeah I try to be as safe as possible when I reload. I don't store powder or primers near my workbench and then only one at a time.

And since I have a turret press which is close enough to single stage I have a method for no double charges. It takes more time like that but not a big deal.

I check two or three manuals before figuring out how much powder or which primer. Always start near the bottom and work up.

Hodgon shows 12.7 - 14.0 grains H110 with the 100 grain xtp bullet.

You might not get great accuracy with plated bullets like Ranier and Berry above 1300 fps or so, though. With too heavy a crimp and/or too high velocity the thin copper plating can come lose and ruin accuracy.

I do look at Hodgdon's online data. They list 327 but it isn't in every reloading manual, Hornaday has info on 327 at least. For me I would think 12 grains of H110 would be a lot.

Thanks. Crimp is another aspect I'm taking a close look at. I can see what you mean about too tight and the case rim would cut the plating.

Welcome to the fun world of 32's. I have reloaded them since my Dad bought me my first handgun in 1985, a Single Six in 32 H&R.

I have all 3 of the Ruger guns in 327 Federal. I like the full-sized 8 shot BlackHawk the best. I load for volume and economy so faster powders and moderate speeds are my goal. My Dad also casts a couple of 32 bullets, a 93 gr RN and a 115 gr RNFP. The latter is a bullet originally used in the 32-20 round (same .312 diameter). My favorite load is 3.7 gr of Clays under the 115 gr. Bullet and a standard small pistol primer. This is the max load per the Hogdgon data. It does an honest 1, 000fps from the BlackHawk.

Good luck with your loading. Lots of nice helpful folks here with more experience loading than some governments. Most of all, keep your safety first mindset. It makes the shooting sport that much more fulfilling.

Yes, barely.

Bowen Classic Arms replaces the cylinder with one a little longer. That means they widen the window in the frame, which means they deepen the forcing cone in the barrel. It will cost about twice what I paid for my Single Six, but I think it will be well worth it.

Some members have reamed out their .32hr factory cylinders to accept the .327 with good luck.

Yep I sold mine to Hondo and regret it when I look at prices, but his .218 bee seems a worthy cause. I hope to get another when I get home.

Yeah tell me about it. I wouldn't own one at those prices. I bought mine when they first come out. I remember I just happened by it in the case and it was so new they hadn't even priced it yet. I ended up getting it for less than what they were wanting to charge for some reason. GAT Guns there in Illinois just outside of the Cook County line. Very nice gun store actually.
